The Challenge Network is a fast-growing social enterprise that connects and inspires young people across Britain to strengthen their communities.

‘The Challenge’ Programme

The Challenge brings together young people from different backgrounds, builds their confidence and challenges them to make a difference. It is made up of three sequential challenges:

• Week 1 - The Personal Challenge: Participants take on a series of outdoor adventure activities at a residential activity centre to bond them together, build courage and personal responsibility.

• Week 2 - The Team Challenge: Participants learn to work with a series of community groups using skills they are passionate about (including performance, media, sport, enterprise and design & technology).

• Week 3 - The Real Challenge: Participants explore challenges facing local communities and designing a project that will strengthen the local community. They are then challenged to deliver these projects over four consecutive weekends in the Ongoing Real Challenge.

The Role and Responsibility

The Challenge is looking for an efficient, energetic and self-motivated individual to work from mid-June until the end of September 2010 in support of our summer programme.

The primary responsibility of the Ongoing Real Challenge Logistics Officer will be to support the Birmingham Programme Manager logistically in the successful delivery of three community action projects. You will work Thursday to Monday (including the weekend) each week. The role requires strengths in relationship building and a passion for young people, social change and community development.

Particular responsibilities will include:

Relationship building

  • Building good relationships with community partner groups and identifying potential projects with them
  • Working via good relationships with three Ongoing Real Challenge Interns

Logistics Management

  • Sourcing neighbourhood groups for activities
  • Identify and complete booking for venues where activities will take place
  • Purchasing / hiring equipment and materials for the Ongoing Real Challenge activities
  • Arrange summer socials for local Challenge teams
  • Proof and print flyers to advertise Ongoing Real Challenge activities

The Requirements

We are looking for exceptional candidates as outlined in the below characteristics:

Essential / Of interest
Logistics / Successful experience in managing detail for a project
Experience in ambiguous environments where things are often changing / Experience of organising or managing events (in any setting)
People Management / Experience motivating and supporting others people / Experience managing and motivating people under challenging environments, including residential youth programmes
Young people / Natural rapport and understanding of young people.
Good judgement on how to manage difficult behavioural situations. / Experience organising programmes or projects where young people are the main customer
Interested in people’s personal development
Experience with young people with challenging behavioural needs
Experience in a residential youth environment (e.g., youth camp, scout camp, boarding school etc.)
Partnership / Experience in working in partnership with other organisations
Able to give very good first impression and form good relationships with partners
Crisis Management / Experience of working on complex projects and being responsible for health and safety of participants

Remuneration: This role is a contract position and is remunerated at £1,000 per month.
