SW - 01 SAFE TRAILER ENTRY

The section describes steps taken by a HiLo operator to ensure safe entry into trailers at the facility.

General Guidelines:

1)  Operate in a proper and safe manner at all times.

2)  When trailer is placed at Dock: ensure door is open, wheels are chocked & Dock Plate is pulled & secured.

3)  Maintain work area for organization and cleanliness. Specific duties include the following:

a)  Keep docks clean of debris at all times.

b)  Clean HiLo’s daily. Do not leave any garbage on the HiLo.

c)  Keep trailers clean and free of debris.

4)  All lift-truck (HiLo) regulations will be followed at all times.

5)  Perform visual inspection of HiLo at the start and end of your shift & note completion to the Daily Report–Dockman (F27). List found defects to the Mechanical Defects-Vehicle Inspection form (F11) and submit to the garage for needed repairs.

6)  If you see spilled, damaged or poor quality material in an inbound trailer:

a)  Immediately report matter to the Operations Manager or Dock Supervisor.

b)  A photo of the damage is taken.

c)  A Discrepancy Report is completed, photo(s) attached to Report & submitted by the Supervisor.

7)  If you see spilled, damaged or poor quality material in the facility:

a)  Immediately report matter to a Manager or Dock Supervisor.

b)  A Discrepancy Report is completed and submitted to the Supervisor for verification & signature.

c)  Remove material from work area and place in the Non-conforming Product (NCP) Area.

8)  Dock assignments will be made or changed by the Supervisor &/or Management when necessary.

9)  At the end of each shift, park the HiLo in the designated parking area.

Instructions:

1)  Trailers cannot be entered by a HiLo operator until the following is met:

·  Trailer is safely docked by the Truck Driver

·  Trailer has been chocked at left rear wheel of trailer by Truck Driver

·  Dockman raises dock plate and door safety chain has been lowered

2)  The above three rules must be completed and the HiLo operator must physically verify that the wheel is chocked before entry into the trailer.

NOTE: TRAILER WILL NOT BE WORKED UNTIL ALL OF THE ABOVE RULES ARE MET!!!

3)  HiLo operator is to notify the Dock Supervisor when any of the above rules have not been met.

4)  Supervisor advises the Truck Driver when any of the above rules are not met and that the truck is unsafe to work.

5)  Trailer may only be released to leave when the following is met:

·  Inbound loads must be released by a Supervisor or Manager

·  Dock plate is lowered

·  Dockman or Supervisor raises safety chain at the door

·  Truck Driver removes chock from left rear wheel of trailer

NOTE: ONCE THE DOOR SAFETY CHAIN IS RAISED, THE HILO OPERTOR MAY NOT,

UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, ENTER THE TRAILER!!!

6)  Notify Dock Supervisor or Manager if trailer needs to be re-entered. Supervisor or designated Manager informs the Dockman when the trailer needs to be re-entered.

DO NOT RE-ENTER TRAILER UNTIL STEP 1 HAS BEEN COMPLETED!!
