Position Description

The Ohio History Connection has created the Ohio History Service Corps, a program that will engage AmeriCorps volunteers to educate Ohioans on why history is relevant and how it can be used as an effective economic development tool. Partnering with local history organizations, the Ohio History Connection will be placing 10 AmeriCorps service members in communities across the state from September 2014-August 2015.

The AmeriCorps volunteers will focus on the continued preservation and promotion of the state’s historic resources to stimulate tourism and economic growth. AmeriCorps members will serve on one of two teams - the Local History Corps or the Historic Preservation Corps - to promote, raise awareness and preserve Ohio’s strong history through educational experiences for community members.

One Local History Corps members with an archaeology focus will be hosted at the Ohio Historic Preservation Office at the Ohio History Connection in Columbus. The member will work to build the capacity of the Ohio Archaeological Inventory (OAI) through creating and reviewing OAI site form inventories, site location mapping, and assisting with the preservation and care of archaeological collections. The member will also conduct education and outreach services to educate the general public about the importance and relevance of Ohio’s archaeology as part of the Making Archaeology Public Project. This is a full-time AmeriCorps position from September 8, 2014 to August 31, 2015. Members must complete a minimum of 1700 hours.

The Local History Corps member with an archaeology focus will receive training in some or all of the following practices: cultural resource management, survey, and reports associated with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, volunteer management, meeting facilitation, train-the-trainer, event planning, marketing/public relations, and community mapping. Members will also attend the Ohio Local History Alliance annual meeting and regional Ohio Local History Alliance meetings as well as participate in National Days of Service and AmeriCorps Week.

Program Specific Responsibilities

·  Assist in the receipt and information processing of Ohio Archaeological Inventory (OAI) site form submissions, providing both preliminary and detail review. Use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) mapping software to evaluate location and physiography aspects of site environment.

·  Review of submitted site inventory information through web-based I-Form application. Expectation of reviewing or preliminary review of approximately 200-300 newly submitted forms.

·  Assist in the processing of survey reports into the Archaeology Survey Reports database using the NADB bibliographic record format. Plotting of archaeological site locations onto the Ohio Archaeological Inventory Archive USGS 7.5’ Topographic Quadrangle maps.

·  Complete site forms for sites that have not been previously recorded within the Ohio Archaeological Inventory.

·  Conduct education and outreach services regarding Ohio archaeology.

·  Assist in the processing of archaeological collections.

Local History AmeriCorps members have the following General Responsibilities:

·  Support program staff, your supervisor, and host site staff in duties as appropriate and necessary for your specific initiatives.

·  Consult with your supervisor and/or the program director if you have any ideas, issues, or concerns, offering analysis and solutions whenever possible.

·  Practice sound health habits, including getting sufficient rest and breaks, to effectively perform the position requirements.

·  Respect confidentiality of volunteers, staff, and AmeriCorps members.

·  Report any accidents, illness, leave of absences or sickness to the program director as soon as possible.

·  Maintain accurate records, reports, timecards and travel reimbursement forms and submit completed reports, forms, and timecards by the required deadlines.

·  Assist AmeriCorps members and program staff with activities and events that are during times you are available.

·  Market your events and activities through local media, social media and website resources.

·  Reflect the full partnership of AmeriCorps, ServeOhio, Ohio History Connection, and your host site in your service activities and promotions.

·  Actively monitor your progress towards obtaining the required 1700 hours of service.

·  Actively monitor your progress towards obtaining the required 170 hours of training and professional development.

Citizenship training and responsibilities

·  Participate in AmeriCorps training and events as required and requested by ServeOhio and/or the Ohio History Connection.

·  Participate in and complete AmeriCorps citizenship training, if requested by the Ohio History Connection.

·  Coordinate or participate in community service activities for National Days of Service and AmeriCorps Week.

·  Attend the annual Ohio Volunteer and Community Service Conference if requested by the Ohio History Connection.

Program training

·  Participate in orientation training in Columbus September 9-12, 2014.

·  Participate in one statewide conference and your Ohio Local History Alliance Regional Meeting in spring 2015.

·  Participate in winter training in Columbus in December 2014.

·  Participate in mid-service training in Columbus in March 2015.

·  Attend a final member gathering in Columbus in August 2015.

·  Attend monthly webinars provided by Ohio History Connection staff.

·  Participate in monthly member conference calls with Ohio History Connection staff.

·  Participate in any additional member training and/or professional development opportunities presented during the program year by the Ohio History Connection, its host sites, Serve Ohio or AmeriCorps.

Service schedule: Local History AmeriCorps members are expected to serve approximately 35-40 hours a week or a minimum of 1700 hours total from September 9, 2014 to August 31, 2015.

Skill requirements and qualifications:

Physical Demands: Some stooping, bending and lifting no more than 25 pounds. Must be able to sit for long periods of time. Travel.

Service Environment: Environment includes office, community and outdoor setting. Some travel required.

Education and/or Experience: College graduate in anthropology or archaeology. Knowledge of archaeology and archaeological methods, Ohio history. Some educational and work or volunteer experience in archaeology or historic preservation with some knowledge of state and federal preservation programs is desired.

Language Skills: Excellent communication skills both oral and written. Must be comfortable with public speaking.

Mathematical Skills: Basic

Technical Skills: Computer proficient, including Microsoft Office products and interest in learning new programs, software and equipment including basic Geographic Information Systems software. Knowledge of Microsoft Access or comparable database software is preferred. Proficiency is Adobe Photoshop preferred but not required.

Reasoning Ability: Excellent organizational skills. Able to take initiative to work independently and with a team.

Other: Travel by car is required. Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle and be insurable under the Ohio History Connection’s insurance policy.

Complete and pass and BCI and FBI background check.
