LAWN INSTALLATION

& MAINTENANCE ADVICE

INSTALLATION

-  Loosen or Rotary hoe existing and spread top soil to a depth of 100mm

-  Level out soil to 10-20mm below edges and paths

-  Evenly broadcast turf starter fertiliser.

-  Wet ground thoroughly before laying turf to avoid burning the roots.

-  Lay turf back & forth across area, keeping rolls close together.

-  Avoid turf roll joins in the same spot, stagger joins like laying bricks.

-  Give turf a HEAVY soaking immediately after installation to ensure the air between the turf and soil is removed.

WATERING

-  Once established, if weather is hot & humid – don’t over water.

-  Early morning deep waters and then a couple of dry days are better for healthy root systems than shallow regular watering.

FERTILISING

-  Fertilise every three months with Yarra Complex Fertiliser or Pivot 400 – this is readily available at Landmark.

-  Apply at the rate of 3kg per 100 square meters. This is roughly ½ 15lt bucket to 100m2.

-  Hand broadcast on to dry lawn, then water in

-  Hand fertiliser spreaders are available at Landmark for quick and more even application.

-  An application of a seaweed solution eg; Seasol can really help winter colour if applied around Easter. However, still give the lawn a good feed of Yara Complex or Pivot 400 fertiliser during that period as well.

FIRST MONTH CARE

-  Watering start times recommended are 6am, 11am & 3pm for the first 3weeks. Watering time will vary between watering systems.

-  First mow should be as soon as you can pull on the leaf of grass and it holds firm on the ground. Usually around two weeks. Don’t allow the grass to get to long before its first mow. Mow regularly until the lawn settles in.

-  Keep turf moist at all times.

-  Extra caution is needed until lawn is well rooted down.

MOWING

-  Mow regularly & maintain a medium grass height.

-  When mowing leave at least 2/3 of the leaf as it contains nutrients and moisture. Remove 1/3 with regular mowing (weekly) throughout the growing season.

-  Mow when the grass is dry as possible.

-  Use a catcher.

-  Keep lawnmower blades sharp.

-  In about October each year drop the mower cutting height down and scalp the lawn to remove old growth. Lawn will recover.

WEEDS

-  A healthy lawn should keep most weeds at bay, but for flat weeds such as cape weed ‘daises’ & Patterson’s curse you can use ‘Kamba M’ or most flat week chemicals from Landmark.

-  For grassy weeds use Monument to remove.

INSECTS

-  Apply insecticide applications in mid to late September and November to prevent beetle damage to your turf. Irrigate or water in well after applying to get into the soil.
