Agenda:

Review Agenda and Announcements -- Tammy Welcome

  • Welcome to the LLC Meeting

Reading Room Progress -- Ulli Weier

  • The Reading Room will be used for small receptions and showcase the Lab’s new books being purchased for the collection.
  • Michael Golden shared over 200 books were selected for purchase. The selection of books is in line with the Lab’s strategic initiatives, and the interests of the Lab scientists. The Director’s office also added books to the list. We may need to allow access to the books prior to the opening of the new Reading Room.
  • The furniture purchase was finalized, with a partial order with this year’s funds and the balance with FY11 funds. The furniture will be stored until construction is completed. The date for final build-out has not been determined. There are plans to have wheel chair access and we may need after-hours card key access.

e-Resources Collaboration Update–Mary Ann Mahoney

  • Background details were provided for the drivers and goals of the UCB/LBNL collaboration. Each quarter more titles and added resources are available to LBNL participants; this includes e-Journals and e-Books, archives and back-file collections, and the article and indexing databases.
  • To date the remaining resources which need to be transitioned include: 61 journal licenses, 13 databases, and 10 e-Book or e-Book packages.
  • We are able to maintain costs via multi-year licenses with inflation caps; though we are receiving pressure from Nature and ACS.

Library Plans for FY2011–Tammy Welcome

  • The Mission is to provide responsive and timely information access to aid LBNL scientists to conduct research. We are improving the collection and access for patrons.
  • Discussions included collaboration and customer satisfaction.
  • Plans have begun for maximizing resource access while minimizing the current Library space.
  • We need to communicate what tools and resources are available for our patrons.
  • NOTE: The presentation was to generate discussion, the Strategic Plan can be found in

the IT Division Web page at: (page 18).

Communications Plan for e-Resources – Jeffery Loo

  • Jeff shared the different log-in pages to the many resources including OskiCat, Google Scholar, UCB Library pages, Facebook, searching PubChem, etc. There are many approaches for both online and offlinevia email, swag, bookmarks and posters.
  • LBNL currently does not have UC e-Links, though it is being discussed.
  • The link-resolver is a powerful tool, and it enables you to get statistics, which may reside on many home pages.

Other Notes:

  • It seems Library patrons are not utilizing the Library Blog or Facebook, if there isn’t much activity, Michael Golden will take it down.
  • It would be useful to have a quick-link added to the Commons home page directing people to the Library.
  • In the new employee orientation, there is no information about the Library, this would be an avenue to getinformation to new patrons.
  • Topic for the next meeting would be how to communicate to LBNL patrons the tools and resources available to them.
