This report covers the academic year of 2012/13.

The Governing body at Llangyfelach Primary School aim to provide positive, strategic support and challenge to the Headteacher and Staff at the school during a year of change and improvement. Everyone has worked hard to provide the high quality education that our pupils deserve.

The Governing body have taken a keen interest in understanding the schools’ data, and are using it to challenge the leadership team and develop the schools improvement priorities in teaching and learning. We will be developing this role going forwards to ensure that we set appropriate targets for further improvement. This report provides parents with summary comparative data on learner outcomes, attendance and targets.

During this year, the school has implemented a new planning system for teaching that has resulted in a large improvement in the systems that track pupils’ achievements. These systems will not only help to further improve teaching standards in the school, but will also ensure teaching is more targeted to individual pupil needs and abilities.

Central to the Welsh Government’s educational priorities is the need to improve learning outcomes for pupils in Wales, and there is a particular focus on improving literacy. In line with this priority the school continues to focus on improving literacy, a stronger emphasis on improving reading standards across the key stages is being developed for 2012/13. The school has made significant progress in applying the Literacy and Numeracy Framework to teaching and learning, the curriculum and assessment procedures. The Senior Management Team has already mapped the framework across all subjects and has devised an amended planning system for all teachers to adopt, ensuring that opportunities for the development of Literacy and Numeracy skills are maximised across the curriculum.

As in most schools in the current economic climate, there continues to be a pressure on the schools allocated budget. The school has begun many initiatives to ensure the impact of loss of funds is reduced, including the introduction of Wraparound which has resulted in an increase in the number of pupils who attend the school. The priority of the Governors in making such decisions will always be to provide the best possible education for the children within the financial parameters we are set.

Our thanks go once again to the hard working members of the PTFA whose marvellous fundraising efforts continue to enable the school to buy resources and equipment to enhance the children’s learning and experiences at school.

We will be organising an Annual Parents Meeting to present this report on 2nd December 2013. We encourage all parents to attend to discuss the contents of this report and the future plans for the school.

Your on-going support is much appreciated.

The 7 themes are Choices and Decisions, Consumption and Waste, Climate Change, Wealth and Poverty, Identity and Culture, Health and Natural Environment. Each topic throughout the school has been analysed in order to match and maximise learning opportunities in these themes.

Pupils can attend our school the day after their third birthday which is an alteration to the previous policy of the following academic year after their third birthday.

Pupils with disabilities are welcomedand offered equal rights and opportunities at LlangyfelachPrimary School.

School Policies / Strategies:

The school has many policies which are reviewed as required to take into account new legislation, turnover of staff and ongoing school development.

Policies created last year are:

  • Behaviour Policy
  • Assessment and Reporting Policy
  • Attendance and Punctuality
  • Charging Policy
  • Child Protection
  • Complaints Policy
  • Disciplinary Procedures
  • Equal Opportunities
  • Health and Safety
  • Marking Policy
  • Performance Management
  • Positive Behaviour
  • Capability Policy
  • Whistleblowing Policy

Of particular significance this year we are due to review the following policies:

  • Safeguarding Children Policy
  • Teaching and Learning Policy
  • Accessibility Policy and Plan
  • All Subject Policies
  • Administrating Medicines
  • Fire Safety
  • Sun Safety

All policies are/will become available to view and download on the school website under our Policies and Procedures section.

Facilities and Access

Llangyfelach Primary has recently refurbished toilet facilities and are of a very good standard. All toilet facilities can be accessed from all areas of the school. The school also has a high end security system to ensure the safety of all members of the school community while in our care. For ease of access to all areas of the school, we have an elevator located near the main entrance and the reception entrance. The school’s Accessibility policy and plan is currently being updated to reflect recent work undertaken within the school.

Special Education Needs

The school has a written policy for SEN with clearly documented procedures which comply with the SEN Code of Practice for Wales.

Individual Education Plans are in place for those pupils at the School Action Stage of the Stage Referral Process and onwards.

The resources allocated to the special needs budget are based upon the results of the Annual County Reading survey which takes place in November of each year and also to individual pupils appropriate to the assessment of their needs.

Support has been accessed from the LEA’s Access to Learning Team and other sections.

Mrs. N. Thumwood undertakes the role of SENCO (Special Education Needs Co-ordinator)and has been replaced by Miss Evans for the duration of her maternity leave.

  • Target groups for supporting pupils are set up and are underway - staff are trained and allocated to provide appropriate intervention, in order to raise standards in Core Subjects.
  • SEN Literacy: Groups from each class are provided with support based on their specific needs. Teaching Assistants (TA) withdraw pupils in small groups for intense Literacy support. TA’s evaluate learning and feedback to class teachers.
  • Basic Skills Groups (Catchup): Using previous Progress in English and Maths data (PIM & PIE) pupils in Year 2 and 6 are targeted for specific support in order to raise levels of attainment to Outcome 5 (KS1) and Level 4 (KS2)
  • MAT: Presently, pupils identified as More Able and Talented (MAT) are being targeted at class level, which is proving to be successful. There are new systems for monitoring provision for these learners, which will be reviewed March 2014.
  • Mild to Complex Needs: Additional to the SEN groups we are in the process of setting up specific groups for Dyslexia, DCD and Speech and Language. We have the resources and staff are trained.

PTFA

We are extremely grateful once again for the help and support provided to the school by the PTFA. The pupils have enjoyed a number of social events during the year and fundraising efforts have benefited the pupils in many ways:

  • New equipment – iPads, IMac, etc
  • Contributions to school fund for subsidising educational visits.
  • Contributions to costs of educational visitors to school.
  • Active support in enhancing school premises - Climbing Trail.

Many thanks to all P.T.F.A. members past and present for their efforts and outstanding support for whole school improvement.

Links with the Community

Llangyfelach Primary School continues to be actively involved in the local and wider community. The children benefit greatly from the visits of local clergy, police, fire officers, health workers and road safety personnel.

Pupils have visited a wide variety of educational and community venues such as museums, religious sites, theatres etc.

The caring, sharing ethos of the school is extended to annual fundraising for local and national charities.

LlangyfelachSchool continues to maintain its good links with PontarddulaisComprehensiveSchool and its feeder schools. Regular liaison meetings and a programme of links are provided for Year 6 pupils prior to transition from Llangyfelach Primary School to the Comprehensive.

We have further developed our links with businesses and clubs in order for our facilities to be utilised by our community, such as a local karate club, football teams and the Llangyfelach Brownies.

Health and Safety

  • The new climbing trail has had a new resin floor installed
  • New football pitch has been placed in the sports area. This wet pour surface will enable the school to rent out our facilities to local teams. This surface provides improved levels of safety for our children when playing sports during break times and PE sessions.
  • All areas in the lower yard have been resurfaced.
  • The gas shed doors have been replaced and new roof is planned for this term. Health and Safety Corporate, Health and Safety Education and Buildings Maintenance are all working on this for us.
  • New lighting has been fitted in the top yard area to provide appropriate and safe luminosity levels.
  • Health and Safety Corp have paid for all skips we have used since the start of the school year. This has helped us move much of the rubbish/clutter from the school.
  • The school hall has recently been painted by Wilkinsons and two classrooms by a company run by a parent.

Wraparound Full Day Care

  • Our main aim in this initiative is to be able to provide our community with childcare and education from 8am to 5:30pm every day from ages 3 to 11 years.
  • Initially, this strategy was to provide a wraparound facility in order to have fulltime education in the Nursery class. This would enable us to provide extra support and development prior to Reception, also to attract potential families to the school to strengthen numbers for our future and therefore securing the growth of our school. However, throughout the registration process we began to see a wider potential for the community and our school. Hence, the growth from just Nursery children to KS1 and 2 also.
  • This service has proven to be extremely successful in its aims and has surpassed our expectations.
  • We have also extended our ages range to 12 years. Many children from the comprehensive school are attending regularly.

Sporting Aims and Achievements

Pupils are encouraged to take part in school based sporting activities and their outside achievements are also recognised and valued in school. Pupils regularly bring in their certificates to be recognised in the whole school assemblies.

An annual programme of swimming coaching has provided the opportunity for pupils to start swimming from Year 3.

We have a number of teams which take part in county tournaments and leagues such as our Football, Netball, Athletics and Cross Country teams.

Extra-Curricular Activities/Clubs

The school has a range of clubs that are run by staff oroutside agencies every day after school as well as our successful Wraparound service.
