Learn about Viking traders, their routes, the items they traded and their markets by taking part in engaging classroom tasks such as a role-play trade game, a ‘senses’ art activity and a “Viking Dragon’s Den” challenge.

Block D: Viking Trade

By the end of this block you will have achieved the following outcomes: /

Session 1
Historyand English
Why and where did the Vikings trade?
Learn why and where the Vikings traded; explore the trading routes and then take part in a Viking trade game. / Children will
  • understand the meaning of trade and link this to modern day
  • explore some of the main trading routes and cities that grew because of the trade
  • appreciate that trade was an important element of Viking life
  • role play – take part in the Viking trade game taking on a variety of roles and appreciate that each of these roles had an important part in trade

Session 2
History, Computing, and English
Did the Vikings invent something that they could trade?
Investigate the items traded by the Vikings and take part in a ‘Viking Dragon’s Den’ scenario. / Children will
  • investigate what the Vikings traded and what they sold and what they bought
  • use the internetto search for information on what the Vikings bought and sold
  • create an ‘inventory’ of what was sold and what the Vikings expected in return
  • create a PowerPoint presentation
  • role-play ‘Dragon’s Den’. Have panel of buyers from other nations or tribes and the Viking traders have to work at persuading the buyers to be ‘in’ or ‘out’

What might trade be like in Viking times? The Market Place – A journey of the senses
Learn about Vikingmarkets and create a vibrant ‘senses’ painting. / Children will
  • develop their understanding the role of archaeologists in relation to the Viking market
  • further develop an understanding of why tradewas so important to the Vikings
  • develop empathy for life at this time
  • use senses to analyse artists’ work on paintings of the Constantinople market in Viking times
  • create a senses journey as part of their planning in art
  • create a ‘senses’ painting of a Viking market, try and develop the vibrancy of actually being there
  • evaluate their own work and that of others
