PRESIDENT

Holly Sherriff

I think living at home as a fresher and being involved in the living out socials during fresher's week has given me a good idea of what is involved in the role and also how to improve what was run but mostly the things that worked well. To make sure everybody was included I would make sure that a variety of activities were arranged to suit the tastes of everyone. The main goal of the living out is to make sure the students have the opportunity to make new friends even though they aren't in halls and by having different activities it will allow them to do this.

I think I'm a good listener and approachable so would be able to offer advice to any students who have problems or questions. I would also have the confidence to stand up for our group if I thought we were not getting enough or the same recognition as those who lives in halls.

What would you do to make the hall experience an inclusive one? : These are my main aims:

1) To build a strong community with students living outside of college accommodation

2) Socialising events for students to know each other

3) Establish a strong support system for students who encounter personal or academic difficulties

4) Be informed of any student who are struggling with university life

5) Provide assistance to students who are living out or intending to live out, so that they may cope better and prepare them for life outside hostel.

What else would you like to share about why you should be elected? : I understand the difficulties that students face when being on their own outside of hostels as I was the minority living outside of school hostel since high school. Initially I felt quite lost, having to navigate everything entirely on my own. Therefore, I hope for students to avoid such trying times by being able to turn to someone and to share my experiences with fellow students living out.

Publicity; better, greater and more frequent. Everyone wants to meet similar people, but most people didn’t know that ‘Living Out’ existed. We need better marketing to get more people involved, and show that Living Out have socials, sports teams, Karni involvement and other perks of university accommodation. Based off your feedback, I pledge to:

-Access the university database to send introductory emails to everyone who is living out before Freshers, with links to the Facebook page, and release Freshers packs (like halls)

-Completely overhaul publicity by promoting and regulating the Facebook page (currently just promoters spamming), text broadcasting for events, reps at major halls and weekly email updates

-Create exclusive joint events between student accommodation and commuters, like meals, activities and discounted nights out to help us all meet similar people

-Secure parking permits for those driving in

-Stop the university leaving us in isolation, and ensure we’re treated equally!

I’m a friendly, confident and determined first year Accountancy student who’s commuting, but I’ve studied at university for two years and lived in university accommodation before. This means I’m well placed to judge the differences and get the same experience for us. I want to give everyone a platform to share their ideas. I will do this by setting up Facebook polls and surveys for events, to let everyone have an active say.

I’ve taken on a wide range of society roles this year, including Corporate Sponsorship secretary, Publicity team member, Event Co-ordinator, and Fundraising secretary. This means I’ve liaised with the Student’s Union, halls and societies, so I’m very familiar with the work I’m pledging to carry out. I’ve shown strong teamworking skills, internet marketing skills and enthusiasm.

I’d love the opportunity to work extremely hard as your President to build an active, thriving and well-organised Living Out Community!

VICE PRESIDENT

Josie Severn

To make the Living Out experience inclusive I would first of all ensure that everyone stays in contact, whether that be via social media or email to make sure that everyone is aware of the events and activities taking place. For example by using Facebook events, twitter feeds, Facebook groups, chats and email newsletters. I would also not treat living out in a way that makes us feel excluded from the rest of the university and would make sure that members mixed with each other as well as other halls and were open to the same opportunities as them. As Vice President I would ensure that the rest of the committee organised events that included every member of the living out group. For example socials for those who enjoying partying and events that do not include this to make sure every single person is included and represented equally.

As I have lived at home in my first year, I know how it feels to be a member of living out and I have got on well at university so far and have participated in many socials and made lots of friends. However this has been slightly more difficult and I know it has been more difficult for others so I want to make this process easier and ensure that every member of living out has a good experience like I have had. I feel that living out was included well in freshers week and has been forgotten about since so I want to bring living out back in to people's attention. There were also small moments where I did feel excluded such as when all halls had T shirts for the finale party but we didn't, This is something I'd like to change to make sure everyone is included

Amy Collins

As I am a living out student myself, I have noticed that many students who aren't living in halls start to feel lonely, as if they're not a part of something. I would like to give living out students the same experience as the students that live in halls, if not better. I would encourage people to participate in events and make sure they know that the committee is there for them, if needed. I would also like to gain personal experience for myself and make some new friends!

I believe I should be elected for the position as I would do my best to make sure living out students get the same experience as students living in halls. It is important to feel a part of something and being a living out student myself, I feel not many students who live out, feel this. Therefore I would ensure students get the most out of it and make them realise they are not alone!

WELFARE REP MALE

By ensuring Living Out students have equal access to services and events held on campus off campus through partnerships. For example using city centre based health clinics to provide screenings & drop ins for Living Out students as well as a weekly event to give all Living Out students the opportunity to meet and network.

Having previously volunteered as Vice-Chair for a regional health charity as well as currently volunteering for the local branch of a world-wide charity I've built up a large skill set that I can bring to this role.

WELFARE REP FEMALE

After living at home during my first year of university I really feel as though there needs to be an online community specifically for all living out students. Here, experienced students could offer advice to others and share their know-how. It would act as a lifeline; students with problems could have somewhere to turn to whether to anonymously speak to a rep, or be connected to the relevant professional persons on campus. First year students could meet others before even arriving at university, thus making them feel less isolated. Of course, social events for living out students could be promoted here - let’s make a living out community! A weekly email newsletter aimed at living out students informing them of the events on and around the campus would further encourage involvement with university life, putting the information out there for students rather than them having to go searching!

I would like to be the Female welfare rep because I want students to love living out as much as I do! As a friendly face on campus, I would always be willing to listen and offer my advice, no matter what the problem. I would be a contact of trust: someone who is willing to go that extra mile to connect others, offer support and promote the equal treatment of all students at Nottingham. I want to eliminate any fears students may have about living out by being an active part of a team that welcomes all external students on to campus and in to our exciting city! Most importantly, I want people who are living out to know that they are not alone! Nottingham offers ALL students an AMAZING university, campus, city and student life – it’s there to make the most of, I want to show everyone how!
