Deadlines Deadlines Deadlines

Is your calendar full of deadlines for a variety of 4-H activities this summer?? Do you plan ahead for completing the required paperwork that needs to be “turned in” at the Extension Office?? Are you thoughtful of your leaders about getting required signatures??

Deadlines are defined as the latest time for finishing something. We welcome you to complete the paperwork, get the required signatures, and turn it in here at the Extension Office several days before the deadline for your event.

Snail-mail, e-mail, and faxed 4-H paperwork arrives at our office from time to time. We have no control over the speed at which these methods work….thus they are not the ideal way to make sure deadlines are met. A quick call from you or a request for a written reply confirming the arrival of paperwork lets you know that everything arrived by a deadline.

There are several advantages to doing the paperwork before the deadline:

  • You eliminate the “last minute” pressure on your parents & yourself.
  • You have been thoughtful of your project leader’s time.
  • You save time here at the Extension Office when turning things in.
  • You allow office staff the opportunity to carefully review the paperwork.
  • You feel prepared and ready to do well with your project at fair time.

Help yourself, your family, your leader, and your Extension Staff by planning ahead and turning in the required paperwork BEFORE the deadline day. Paperwork that arrives after the deadline will not

be accepted. It is your responsibility to make sure we have it on time!

Completion of 4-H Projects-

In order to complete your 4-H project, receive a completion certificate, and not have an

incomplete count against your 4-H club you are requied to do the following three things (for any project).

  1. You must complete the project related record book, and score a minimum of 70% on the recordbook.
  2. You must complete two community service project. Community service must be

done outside of 4-H, and charitable contributions do NOT count. Community

service is time given to an outside organization or individual.

  1. You must participate in a completion activity. For most of you, county fair counts as your completion activity, however, there can be circumstances which

require an alternate event. Talk to your extension agent if you are unable to

Getting Ready for Interview Judging

Weeks before interview judging…..

  • Projects begun several weeks & months before fair will give the member added knowledge and breadth of project skills. Have a plan and proceed with it early.
  • Know the requirements for your project. Does it require a display, samples, experiments, interviews, etc. in addition to the display, project and e-record?
  • Neatness counts. Take your time making item(s) or the display. Really show the judge what you know and did.
  • Prepare answers beforehand for expected questions.
  • Have intelligent questions memorized to ask at the end of the interview.
  • Practice, practice, practice – set up mock or practice interviews.
  • Be yourself.

The day of interview judging…..

  • Be well groomed. This includes clean hands, hair and fingernails.
  • Be rested and eat a good breakfast.
  • Don’t chew gum.
  • Use good posture. Sit and stand straight and tall.
  • Be polite and use your best manners with everyone.
  • Be prepared to talk about your project. Know what you did, how you did it, what you learned and what you might do differently the next time.
  • When answering the judge’s questions, speak clearly and loudly enough for the judge to hear your answers.
  • During your interview, look directly at the judge. Give him/her your full attention. Don’t be distracted by other people or noises around you.
  • Think about the question asked before immediately answering.
  • Be enthusiastic about your project and the knowledge and skills you’ve learned.
  • Thank the judge when the interview is finished. Remember, the real purpose of judging is sharing and learning.
  • Be pleasant and confident. Smile and be enthusiastic!
  • Be proud of your accomplishments!! You worked hard to deserve them.

PROJECT MATERIALS

Project materials are available for you to use as you begin your projects for this year. See our selection of:

McCalls patterns for beginning garment construction

Extensive set of leather crafting tools

Cake pans, bags and decorator tips

Knitting needles and other craft supplies

We’re glad to share these with you. Stop by the Extension Office at your convenience to see what is available.

Packing Projects for the Colorado State Fair

Family and Consumer Science 4-H members will need to supply proper packing materials for your own projects when they are to be transported by the Extension Office to the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo. Plan ahead to make packing and labeling projects such as decorated cakes or ceramics go smoothly for you and the department superintendents on Sunday, August 7. Core and Specialty Food projects may be remade and packed ready for transport…..then brought to the Extension Office by 10am on August 15th.

Packing Food Exhibits Bound for the Colorado State Fair

Make sure the food is well cooled before packing. Place food on a sturdy, paper or foam plate which is large enough so the food fits completely inside the edges of the plate. This is especially important for quick bread loaves. Cover food loosely with foil or put in a plastic bag. DO NOT use plastic wrap as it will be in direct contact with food. Write your name, the project unit, and county on the bottom of the plate and on the sturdy box used for transporting. Put the plate in the sturdy box (with a top) and pack securely, so the plate cannot shift during travel. The box should not be much larger than the food product. You may need to cut a box down for your exhibit. The box needs to be strong so other boxes can be stacked on top of it for traveling to the fair.

Packing for Decorated Cakes going to State Fair

Cakes should not be covered with plastic or foil. Before you decorate, put a dab of icing under the cake on your board to secure the cake during travel. Put your name, the project unit, and county on the bottom of the cake board and also on the outside of the box or plastic carrier you are using to transport your cake. Pack the cake in a sturdy box or container so the decorations will not be damaged. You may need to cut down a box to more closely fit the size and shape of your cake. Secure the cake with packing or shelf liner so the cake board will not shift. (The bubble-type shelf liner works well for this.) The box or container will need to be strong enough so that it can be stacked in the van for transport.

Reminder: When signing up for interview judging. Decorate Your Duds, Foods and Clothing need to declare which class/classes you are showing in. ie: cookies, no bake, ect…..
