Year 7 Catch Up Funding 2016 - 17

Literacy and Numeracy Catch up funding

The Government has made a commitment to provide additional funding to schools for each year 7 learner with below expected attainment in Literacy or Numeracy. The purpose of this funding is to enable schools to deliver additional support, such as individual tuition or intensive support in small groups, for those learners that most need it.

At Matthew Moss High School we use this funding to provide targeted short term Literacy and Numeracy Intervention designed to accelerate progress in these areas. After an initial assessment of need, gaps in learning are identified and bespoke programmes of study are developed and delivered which are designed to ensure students make rapid progress in these areas.

Cohort information

National curriculum tests at the end of key stage 2 (KS2) (often referred to as SATs) are administered in mathematics, English reading and English grammar, punctuation and spelling.

We use scaled scores to report the results of these tests to ensure we can make accurate comparisons of performance over time.

A scaled score of 100 or more means that the learner has met the expected standard in each test; a scaled score of 99 or less means they haven't reached the government-expected standard.

Strategies

On arrival at MMHS, 63% of learners have not met the expected standard in reading.

The Iread program is a one-one reading program led by team of iread experts. The program started in 2014 and is one of the strategies that have had a positive impact on English outcomes. All learners in year 7 have completed a 10 week reading program - selected learners repeat iRead in the summer term.

Term / Gain in months
PP Learners / Gain in months
Non PP Learners / Difference
Spring 17 / 27 / 15 / +12
Summer 17 / 16 / 9 / +7
Autumn 17 / 25 / 18 / +7

The cost of iRead is £50,832 per annum, funded through PP and catch up funding.

Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling

On arrival at MMHS, 44% of learners have not met the expected standard in Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling.

Writing has been a focus: learners have explored the effect of language to ‘show not tell’ and learned about the importance of the re-drafting process in order to improve the quality of writing and convey meaning clearly; they have produced a creative writing piece and a non-fiction travel guide. Learners have also been challenged to improve their spelling, vocabulary and technical accuracy, with weekly grammar and spelling home-learning on Doddle.

Measuring impact

Proof of progress tests show above average progress in English:

Maths

On arrival at MMHS, 52% of learners have not met the expected standard in Maths.

Year 7 follow a mastery curriculum. So far we have focussed on developing an understanding of the Number system; including place value, fractions, decimals, percentages and rounding. As a part of the mastery strategy learners spend more time building a deeper understanding of maths topics and work towards developing their reasoning and problem solving skills.

Measuring impact

Proof of progress results are as follows:

These show a need to focus on Maths with Year 7 girls.

Future Plans

●iRead will continue and develop alongside a new primary partnership.

●A new numeracy catch up team will be established - analysis of data will direct their work. Intervention will take place for Year 8 PP girls.
