2.Analysis

2.1User Group 1

2.1.1Overview

The User Group 1 consists of XX users who logged into XX PCs over the reporting period,XX of which are running Windows XP Professional and XX are running Windows 7 Professional.

2.1.2Storage

We can see from the graphbelow that during office hours the total IOPs for all machines remained steady, with a peak average of 300 both read and write IOPs. Between 9-10 am there is a spike to 2000 read and 800 write IOPs which is expected for boot and login storms, when users first log in.

Looking at the table on a per machine basis we can see the average IOPs between 10 and 25. Peak average IOPs are between 30-70 and the peak IOPs from 100-300 which would be expected during a boot storm.

2.1.3Network

Out of office hours network activity remained steady with an average network IO at 10 KB/s, this is normal background traffic. During office hours the usage peaked at 50 KB/s during the morning login storm and then averaged out at around 30 KB/s.

2.1.4CPU & RAM

Average CPU used and Average RAM per desktop used are both quite predictable, with an increase at 8am which then trails off at 6pm as seen in the graph below.

The average CPU per desktop is about 300 MHz and average RAM is approximately 1100MB. We can expect this number to increase when upgrading to Windows 7.

The table below shows the breakdown per user in the group. We can see a fairly large range of peak averages.

2.2.1Overview

The User group 2 consists of XX users who logged into XX PCs over the 4 week reporting period,XXof which are running Windows XP Professional andXX are running Windows 7.

2.2.2Storage

We can see from the graph below that during office hours the total IOPs for all machines remained steady, with a peak average of 300 both read and write IOPs. Between 9-10 am there is a small spike to 1500 read and 600 write IOPs which is expected for boot and login storms, when users first log in.

Looking at the table on a per machine basis we can see the average IOPs are between 10 and 25. Peak average IOPs are between 30-70 and the peak IOPs from 100-300 which is to be expected during a boot storm.

2.2.3Network

2.2.4CPU & RAM

Average CPU Used and Average RAM per desktop used are both fairly high out of hours; this could be due to windows maintenance or a screensaver which should be investigated further.

The average CPU per desktop is about 500 MHz and average RAM is approximately 1900 MB during office hours.

3.2Proposed Platform

3.2.1Compute

Based on the statistics above we are recommending the compute platform specified below.

This however is for budgetary purposes only and will require further detailed design work before it can be ratified.

There are a number of design decisions that can have an impact on the detailed design of a VDI platform such as linked clones vs. full clones, persistent desktops vs. non persistent and the suitability of VDI for some of the IT staff who consume a large amount of resources.

3.2.1.1Management Block

These servers will be configured in a HA 1+1 cluster to run all management virtual machines associated with the solution.

2x DL360p Gen8 servers with 2x Intel 6 core 2.3 GHz CPU and 128 GB RAM with dual port 10 Gb Ethernet adapter.

3.2.1.2Desktop Block

These servers will be configured in a HA 6+1 cluster to run all virtual desktops.

The proposed platform has a compute capacity of 278 GHz CPU, 576 GB RAM.

Using the Peak Average statistics this will provide enough capacity and some headroom to run the proposed number of virtual desktops whilst allowing for the additional RAM consumption of Windows 7.

7x DL360p Gen8 servers with 2x Intel 8 core 2.9 GHz CPU and 96 GB RAM with dual port 10 Gb Ethernet adapter.

3.2.2Storage

We would recommend a XXX storage array.

The proposed platform has a storage capacity of XXX IOPs and XXX TB of usable disk space.

Using the Peak Average statistics this will provide enough capacity and some headroom to run the proposed number of virtual desktops whilst allowing for the additional resource consumption of Windows 7.

The disk space savings achieved by utilising VMware View Linked Clone desktops should result in a net storage reduction of about 80%

The platform will provide up to approximately40 Gbit or 4 GB/s of network throughput and 2 GB/s of storage bandwidth, which is more than sufficient for the platform requirements.

3.2.3Network

We would recommend using 2x 10 Gbit switches to provide sufficient bandwidth for virtual desktop users who will be streaming their desktops and applications across the network.

3.3Virtual Desktop Configuration

Looking at the resource utilisation of the various user groups, we can split the virtual desktop configuration into 2 basic use cases

  • Standard workers – the majority of the staff fit into this use case definition, utilising 400-800 MHz CPU and 0.8 to 1.5 GB RAM. We can specify a virtual desktop of 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM which should meet these user’s needs.
  • Power Users – the ICT department fall into this category, with users running more resource hungry applications such as Visual Studio and MS SQL Management Studio. A virtual desktop with 2-3 vCPU and 4 GB may be suitable for the ICT department.

However an alternative option may be to stick with physical desktops for the ICT department which may provide a better user experience.

3.4Pilot Users

Based on the information from the LWL assessment, the initial pilot user group should ideally be a smaller group of users with low requirements, and therefore the highest chance of success to virtualise.

We would recommend the UserRroup5 as the initial pilot users.

4.Bill of Materials & Cost Estimates

The following section provides a high level Bill of Materials based on the output of the Liquidware Labs FIT report.

Whilst care has been taken to provide accurate information it is important to state that the information is for guidance only and will be ratified during the detailed design stage.

All costs have been present as retail (RRP) and should be used for budgetary purposes only. From previous experiences, once special bid agreements have been setup the actual purchase price could be approximately 10% - 20% lower than that quoted.

We have included costs for the Profile Unity and Flex App technology from LiquidWare Labs as this maybe appropriate when designing the user persona and packaging/virtualising applications.

Further discussion will be required to identify whether this is necessary, however for completeness the costs have been included.

4.5Storage Array

This hybrid solution provides adaptive performance and scalable capacity for storing and protecting critical applications such as Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, server virtualization, database, and in particular virtual desktops (VDI).

The following estimates have been provided based on the results of the LiquidwareLabs FIT report and our experiences of delivering similar projects of this size.
