PRESIDENT’S OCTOBER 2014 REPORT

PRESIDENT’S OCTOBER 2014 REPORT

We have, as a club, just concluded an extremely busy 8 weeks in the life of the Lions Club of Metung having achieved what would be normally expected to take 6 months in planning, execution and completion. What an amazing full team effort …….. Congratulations to all members and partners who have worked so hard to raise the sponsorship funds ($10,000 after costs) for the Metung Fun Run and the finalisation of the community bus legalities etc. Thank you to everyone who has contributed collaboratively to make the English Pub Night such a success.

Having achieved this, together with having “signed off” at our September Business meeting all the outstanding business of the club and also the passing outstanding Minutes for the Business Meetings and Club Dinner meetings dating back to pre-July 2014 and completed our club’s commitments to the 2014 Metung Fun Run can we now look forward to what I envisage will be a less hectic time.

Several members are disturbed by what they have seen being directed to their President by a couple of members …….. they have said that the behaviours seen they feel does not fit within the PURPOSES or ETHICS of Lions International.

Recently I have had several members come up to me and ask ….

1.  Are you ok? There seems to be something happening in the background and we are troubled.

2.  How are you feeling after being publicly berated at our last Dinner Meeting?

It is now appropriate for me to speak openly to you, our membership, BEFORE we induct any new members into our club. To me, what I am being subjected to, as your leader, I find destructive and if not addressed by your club, will be detrimental to the ongoing future of our club’s success.

This undermining tactic has been obvious to me (and some others) since my election to the position of President in March 2014. I do not know what the underlying reason for this is, however, I suspect it is aimed at pressuring me to resign.

As your President, I'm proud to be given this responsibility and am enjoying working collaboratively with everyone, to the best of my ability and with the passion for community service and community development.

Personally, I find it is disappointing to see this negativity happening, and just at the time when we are seeing how far our club has grown in maturity, strength, passion and numbers over the past years. It was only 8 years ago the Lions Club in Metung was at its lowest morale and looked like folding.

Our club has now grown significantly into a vibrant group (within the Metung & surroundings) with community minded people. In December this year we will be celebrating 31 years of service.

I ask that in future:

1.  Members do not subject me to a barrage of private emails

2.  Members who wish to discuss any matters with me do so in person

3.  Members send all correspondence to the Club Secretary, at the club’s gmail account:

4.  Members agree to build each other up, not undermine and berate (refer to Lions Ethics)

Desma Payne, President
