************************************

Dear Families,

As we round the corner into December, we have many family-friendly events happening here at Lincoln and welcome your visit. While the transition to a new school building is never easy, the staff and children have rallied and truly embraced the spirit in understanding that it’s the people in a school that make a difference-not the space we occupy.

On the curriculum front, last week Lincoln hosted a staff developer from Columbia University’s Teachers College. April Deluge worked with K-2 teachers from several Lakewood elementary schools. During the rotations of the day, Ms. Deluge created a collegial environment where teachers learned side-by-side and then went into Lincoln classrooms to practice their craft of teaching writing under the coaching eye of Ms. Deluge. Not only was this a wonderful experience for teachers and the students of those classrooms, but many other students commented “I didn’t know teachers had to go to school”. This provided a natural way to talk about life-long learning.

On the social justice front, Lincoln students are showing leadership skills by planning for and organizing two events in December. First, we are collecting new PJ’s for needy children to help keep then warm this winter. Then, beginning December 8, Lincoln will be collecting food for distribution to Lakewood families. We are proud of their efforts and caring attitudes.

Wishing your families a festive holiday season,

Sandy Kozelka

DRIVER-LINE UPDATE

Now that the weather is turning colder, we are noticing an increase of traffic through the drive-through pick-up line. To keep traffic moving as quickly as possible, please remember the following plan as set forth by the Lakewood Police Department:

  • Traffic for pick-up travels NORTH ONLY on Bunts
  • Left turn into driveway
  • Follow the traffic arrows around the parking lot
  • Pull all the way around-please don’t stop by the waiting children
  • Children will move to cars once line of traffic stops

WE LOVE PLAYING OUTSIDE!

At Lincoln School, we love going outside for fresh air each day at recess! Know that children will go outside for recess EVERY DAY possible. For this reason, please be sure that your child is dressed appropriately for ALL weather.

If your family needs help securing winter appropriate coats, boots, hats or gloves for your child(ren), please send a note or an email to Mrs. Kozelka (). PTA has a volunteer willing to help secure any needed items. Your privacy is ensured.

Lincoln Singers Perform at Event

Once again, the Lincoln Singers will perform in the Lakewood Hospital Atrium on Saturday, December 6. Join the fun at the Light Up Lakewood festivities and catch the concert at 11:30 in the morning.

Holiday Food Collection

Beginning December 8, food collection boxes will be stationed at Lincoln to help provide meals for many Lakewood families. Please, no perishables or glass containers. Thank you for supporting this important effort by our students.

Lost and Found

Lincoln’s lost and found is located in the cafeteria. There is a rack for hanging items as well as a container for hats, gloves and other small items. Items of value (wallets, glasses, etc.) will be kept in the main office. We have many items waiting to be claimed by owners!

Picking your child up early from school?

Please send a note to your child’s teacher in the morning so that your child can be ready and waiting for you in the office when you arrive.

Essay Contest Winner

Congratulations toLincoln Elementary student Clement Bouvier, who has won the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce's annual 4th Grade "Why I Love Lakewood" Essay Contest. Clem's essay was chosen out of 123 submitted. As the winner, he will receive $100 cash and ride in the Light Up Lakewood Parade as well as help Santa and Mayor Summers flip the switch to Light Up Lakewood on Dec. 6.

Snowflake Shoppe December 5

PTA sponsors the Snowflake Shoppe on December 5 during the school day and extending after school until 4:00. Students will have an opportunity to shop for family members from an array of craft vendors at very reasonable prices.

Winter Concert

Join us for our winter concert on December 17 at 1:30 pm. The concert will be held in the gym and will feature students in grades K-2, Lincoln Singers and the Orchestra. Watch for a flyer to come home giving you the opportunity to take older children home with you after the concert. Completing the form saves you the trouble of waiting in line at the office!

PJ’s for Kids

Student Council is sponsoring a pajama collection for children. New pajamas can be dropped off in the box at school for distribution to keep needy children warm this winter.

Winter Break

It's time to enjoy winter break with your family! There is no school beginning Monday, December 22. Our first day back to school in January will be Monday the 5th.

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT:

As we move into the new year, much is taking place that is reshaping our district. Hazardous material and asbestos abatement is under way at Grant, Lincoln and Roosevelt and will soon be started at the high school. Once the buildings have been abated, demolition will soon follow.

But before we talk about spring, we have to cope with winter. I want to take a moment to remind you of our school closing procedure when it comes to extreme weather. If schools are closed, parents and guardians will be notified by phone call, email and text via our Blackboard Connectnotification system (this system replaces AlertNow). Other ways to find out about the schools’ status are listening to the local TV and radio stations, checking the district website at Facebook page at and/orTwitter account at You may also call the district’s School Closing Hotline at 227-5708.

I know that parents sometimes disagree with the district’s decision to keep schools open during bad weather. If this is the case, parents have the option to keep their child home. That day will be regarded as an excused absence for the student and students will be allowed to make up any work missed. Please call your child’s school absence line to let the school know your child will not be attending due to the bad weather.

On another note, please be mindful that Lakewood is a walking district and it is imperative that our students have safe routes to school. Please encourage neighbors to clear sidewalks as soon as possible after a big snowfall. When sidewalks are not shoveled, students often resort to walking in the streets, which is obviously a dangerous situation. Let’s help keep our kids safe!

Wishing every family a happy and healthy holiday season!

December Physical Education News

Ohio’s Physical Education academic content standards provide clear, rigorous expectations for all students. Physical education is a critical component of a complete education. Beyond the physical benefits, quality physical education has been linked to cognitive, affective and quality of life benefits for students at the elementary level.

This year once again students in 2nd and 5th will take part in Physical Education Evaluation as part of Senate Bill 210. This evaluation will be on this year’s state report cards and feature ameasure for Ohio schools: how their students are doing in physical education.Students will be assessed on six physical education standards:

  • Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
  • Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
  • Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity.
  • Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
  • Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal behavior and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
  • Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction.

The school report card will identify a Physical Education Index score of High, Moderate or Low success. The index score identifies the extent to which Lincoln’s 2nd and 5th grade students are successful in meeting the benchmarks contained in Ohio’s Physical Education Standards.
