Lincoln Collegeand theFaculty of Lawinviteapplicationsfromsuitablyqualifiedcandidatesfor a Tutorial Fellowship in Law (The Hanbury Fellowship)and AssociateProfessorshipofLaw,with effectfrom 1 September 2018 or assoon aspossiblethereafter.Theperson appointedwillbeexpectedtoengage in advancedstudy or research inLaw, andto givehigh-quality tutorials,classes,lectures,andsupervision at bothundergraduate andgraduatelevel.

The role of AssociateProfessor at Oxford

AssociateProfessor isthemainacademiccareergrade atOxford witha focusonresearchand teaching,spanning thefull rangeof professorgrades intheUSA.AssociateProfessorsareappointed jointlyby aUniversitydepartment/faculty andan Oxfordcollege,and youwill have acontractwith both.

AssociateProfessorsarefullmembersof Universitydepartments/facultiesand ofcollegegoverningbodies,playing a role inthe democraticgovernanceoftheUniversityandtheir college.Thesuccessfulcandidatewilljoinalively,intellectuallystimulating,and multi-disciplinarycommunitywhich performstothe highestinternationallevels in researchand teaching, with extraordinarylevelsof innovation,creativity,and entrepreneurship.

Thereisconsiderableflexibility in theorganisationof duties,withthree8-weekundergraduateteachingterms andgeneroussabbatical leavetobalanceteaching andresearch(pleasesee theBenefits,Terms,and Conditionssection forfurther detailsofsabbaticalleave).There isthepotential for temporarychangestothebalanceofdutiesbetweenCollegeand University to enableafocus on different aspectsof workat differentcareerstages.

Oxfordoffersmanyopportunitiesforprofessionaldevelopment inresearch andteaching.AssociateProfessorsmayapplyforthe titleoffullProfessor in annualexercises. If thetitleisconferred, therewillalsobeaccesstoprofessorialmeritpayopportunities.In exceptionalcases,thetitle offullProfessormaybeawardedon appointment.

AssociateProfessorswhoareawarded thetitleoffullProfessorreceivefromthe University anadditionalsalarypaymentof £2,700perannum(unlesstheyalreadyreceiveadditionalrecruitmentorretention payments atthatlevelor above);andtheywill beeligible forconsideration in subsequentregular exercisesfordistinction awardson thescale£3,525to £80,424(unlessthey alreadyreceiveadditionalrecruitmentor retention payments inexcess ofthe leveloftherelevantdistinction award).Theconfermentofthetitleof Professordoesnotresult inanychange in theduties ofthe postholder.

Appointmentsareconfirmed aspermanentonsuccessfulcompletionof a reviewduring thefirstfiveyears.ThevastmajorityofAssociateProfessorssuccessfullycompletethisinitialreview.

Duties ofthepost

Themainduties ofthe postareasfollows:

(i)to engage in researchandpublication atan internationallycompetitivelevel in Law;

(ii)toprovide8 contact hoursof tutorialteaching inLawduring each weekof Full TermforLincoln College;

(iii)tosharepastoral dutiesand participate intheorganisationof theteaching ofLawinCollege;

(iv)toparticipatein the undergraduateadmissionsprocess in College;

(v)to give,underthedirectionofthe FacultyofLaw,nofewerthan16lecturesineach academicyear[1];

(vi)to make an appropriatecontribution tothesupervision andteachingof graduatestudents intheLaw Faculty;

(vii)to act as an advisor to graduate students of Law in the College.

(viii)toshare in Universityexamining;

(ix)toundertakea reasonableshare ofFaculty andCollegeadministrativeduties.

(x)To act as a Trustee of Lincoln College

Thesuccessful candidatewillhave amajorresearch interest in Trusts,Land Law, or Tort Law,and willbeexpectedtoteach fortheCollegeand Faculty in thatfield.Preferencemaybegiventoa candidatewhoisableto teach forthe Collegeand Faculty in twoormoreof those fields.

A.Lincoln College

Thereare38self-governingandindependent collegesat Oxford,giving bothacademicstaffandstudentsthebenefitsof belonging toa small,interdisciplinarycommunityaswellas toa large,internationally-renowned institution.Thecollegiatesystemfosters a strong senseof community,bringing togetherleading academicsand studentsacrosssubjects,andfromdifferent cultures andcountries.All Tutorial Fellows are members of the College’s Governing Body and serve as Trustees of the College.

Lincoln is one of the oldest Oxford Colleges and occupies fine historic buildings located in the centre of the City. It has a strong sense of collegiality with a reputation for integrating its graduate and undergraduate students in a highly successful traditional community. There are currently forty-nine Fellows in College, of whom twenty-nine are also College Tutors responsible for teaching and the welfare of students. About 95 undergraduate and 120 graduate students, in a wide range of subjects, are admitted to Lincoln each year and about 600 are in residence at any one time. Law at Lincoln

The College normally maintains three Tutor in Law. Currently these are Professor Simon Gardner, who will retire in September 2018, Professor Stefan Enchelmaier, and Dr Barbara Havelkova.

Lincoln currently admits 8undergraduates each year to read for the BA in Jurisprudence (Law), making Law one of larger subject groups in College. The postholder will be expected to work closely with the other Fellows, to organize tutorial provision for undergraduates in Law, to provide pastoral care, and to select candidates for admission to the College in Law.

The College also has a significant cohort of graduate students in Law. Each year 12-15 students are admitted to read for the Law Faculty's taught Master's degrees (BCL, MJur, MSc in Criminology, and MLF) or for the research degrees of MPhil and DPhil.

Theperson appointed to the TutorialFellowshipin Lawwill berequiredtoprovideeightcontacthoursof teaching perweekduring Full Term(eachof Oxford’sthreeFull Termsperyearis eightweekslong).Thetutorialstintmaybemadeup partlythrough tutorials givento undergraduatesfrom othercollegesin thetutor’sfield(s)ofspecialisation. In addition togiving tutorials, theTutorialFellowwillberequiredtoundertakethefollowing: toholdmeetingswitheachstudentatthebeginning andend ofeverytermtodiscusstheirprogrammeofworkand academicprogress; to reporton theirstudents’progressto theTutorialBoard;toarrangeout-collegetuitionas required;toset andmark,or arrange to havemarked,mock examination papers(Collections)atthe beginningof each term,except inthetermfollowingaUniversityexamination;to assistwith CollegeOpenDays;and to participate intheannualadmissionsexercise inDecember. In addition, sheorhe willact asCollegeAdvisortograduate studentsofthe College readingfor higherdegrees in Law, whoare supervisedbycolleagueselsewherein theUniversity. Aboutthe Faculty

TheFacultyof LawisoneofthelargestintheUnitedKingdom, andisthelargestunit in the SocialSciencesDivisionofthe University.Therearesome 160membersoftheLaw Faculty, of whom morethan90areinestablishedUniversityacademicposts.TheLawFacultyhasa distinguishedreputation inresearchand publicationsinLaw. TheResearchExcellenceFramework2014reportedthat substantiallymoretop-ratedresearch activitywentonin LawatOxford than in any other university inthe country.Oxfordwas ranked secondin theworldforLaw inthe2016QS WorldUniversityrankings.

TherearefivespecialisedcentresassociatedwiththeLaw Faculty:theCentreforCriminology,theInstituteof European andComparativeLaw,the CentreforSocio-Legal Studies,theOxford IntellectualProperty Research Centre,and thenewBonaveroInstituteof Human Rights.

TheLawFacultyadministration is based intheStCrossBuilding,which is also wheremostcorelecturestakeplace(inthe Gulbenkian LectureTheatre).Thebuilding alsoaccommodatestheBodleianLawLibrary,the CentreforCriminology,theInstituteofEuropean and ComparativeLaw,other smallerteaching spaces, andacafé.Thebuilding is currentlyshared withthe Facultyof English.

Undergraduateteachingwithin the Faculty

Undergraduate lawadmissions arecurrentlyrunning atapproximately220a year. Up to35of thesefollowtheLawwith LawStudies in Europecourseoverfouryears,oneyear being devotedto studyinFrance,Germany,theNetherlands,Spain, orItaly.Thefull range ofsubjectstaught at Undergraduatelevelmaybefoundon theFaculty website at admissions,are the immediateresponsibility of theFaculty’sUndergraduateStudiesCommitteeand itsAssociateDean forUndergraduateStudies.

Graduateteachingwithinthe Faculty

TheFacultysustainsamajorgraduateprogrammeandits graduateresearch school isthe largestof anylaw schoolin theEnglish-speaking world.Therearecurrentlyabout380graduatestudents,ofwhomabout140 readforthetaughtgraduateDegreeof Bachelorof Civil Law(BCL)andMagisterJuris(MJur),and a further45read foranMSc inLawandFinance(run in conjunction with theSaïd BusinessSchool),each ofwhichmayalsobeaugmentedbyayearofresearch to yield theDegreeofMasterofPhilosophy(MPhil).Othertaughtgraduateprogrammesincludeafull-or part-timeMSc inCriminology,apart-time MSc inTaxation,and a postgraduatediploma in IntellectualProperty LawandPractice(runin conjunctionwith theIPLA). Research activity

TheFacultyhasalwaysencouragedexcellenceand diversityin its researchstrategy,seeking toachievethe highestquality in thebroad rangeof subjectsin which Facultymemberspursue their interests.TheFaculty’sResearch SupportFund providesresourcesforresearchassistance,conference attendanceand otherresearch-relatedactivities.The Faculty’sResearchFacilitatorsupportsapplicationsforexternalresearch funding,and theFacultyprovidessupportforconferencesorganised byFacultymembers.

C.The SocialSciencesDivision

TheUniversity’sacademicdepartmentsand faculties are organisedintofourlargegroups,known asAcademicDivisions(SocialSciences,Mathematical,Physical,andLife Sciences(MPLS),MedicalSciences,and Humanities).Theacademicdivisionsareresponsible foracademicoversightof theteaching andresearchoftheir constituentdepartmentsandfaculties,forstrategicand operationalplanning, andforpersonnel andresourcemanagement. Lengthof appointment

Thesuccessfulcandidatewillholdtwocontracts:onewithLincolnCollegeandonewiththeUniversityofOxford,eachofwhichshallstipulatetheduties,remunerationandtermsofappointmentspecifictothatelementofthepost.ItisaconditionoftheappointmentasTutorialFellowandAssociateProfessorthatthepersonappointedcontinuestoholdboththeassociatedpostsasadvertised.Intheeventofthetermination,forwhateverreason, of theAssociateProfessorship,orotherUniversityofficeonwhich the holding of thisFellowship isdependent, theTutorial Fellowshipin Lawshall itselfterminateonthesamedateas theAssociateProfessorship.

This isintendedtobeapermanent post,subjecttothesatisfactorycompletionofaninitialprobationary yearinCollegeanda subsequent reviewofthe initialperiodofofficeundertaken, notlaterthanthe fifthyearofappointment,bybothCollege andUniversity.The reviewprocessisconstructiveandnon-competitive. Evidenceofteachingcompetence,ofsatisfactoryperformanceofCollegeandUniversityduties,andofsubstantialprogressinresearchwillberequiredforconfirmationofappointment.

Oncompletionoftheinitialperiodofoffice,aTutorialFellowiseligibleforreappointmenttotheretiringage. Under theStatutes ofLincolnCollegeFellowships are formallyrenewedeverysevenyearsuntilretirementage.TheCollege has adopted a retirement ageforacademicpostholders, including thoseholdingjointappointmentswiththeUniversity.The retirement ageis set as the30thSeptemberimmediatelypreceding the69thbirthday. The successfulcandidatewillbe appointedatan appropriatepointontheOxfordscaleforassociateprofessors (thefigure in the‘TotalSalary’column below givesthetotalwhentheCollege andUniversitysalaryareat thesamepointonthe scale,whichmaynotalwaysbethecase).TutorialFellowsappointedbelowthetopofthisrangewillreceive annualincrements to theirCollegestipendof twoscalepointsuntilthey reachthetoppoint.There isalsoan annual‘cost-of-living’review.TheCollege willhaveparticular regardto theFellow’s depthofexperienceinsmall grouportutorialteachingwhen determiningtheentrypointon thescale.

  2. HousingAllowance,HousingLoan:ATutorialFellowmaybeofferedsingleoccupancyaccommodationinCollege, subject to availability.If the Fellowlivesoutof College, a teachingroomwillbeprovided. AFellowlivingoutof Collegepropertyisentitledtoanadditionalhousingallowance, currently£9346perannum as partoftheir taxableandpensionablestipend, andmayapply to theCollege for a loan,uptoamaximumof £120,062 andchargedatabeneficialrate of interest,toassist withhousepurchase.Entitlementtoa housingloan isdiscretionary andnotacontractualright
  3. Supplemental Allowance: each Tutorial Fellow will receive an allowance of £3,000

  5. ResearchAllowances:ATutorialFellowisentitledtodrawuponthe Fellows’ ResearchandEquipment allowance(whichincludes the purchaseofbooks)upto thevalueof£1817per annum,and iseligibletosubmitbids toadiscretionaryresearchfundadministeredbytheCollege.
  6. SabbaticalLeave:TutorialFellowsareentitled to sabbaticalleavefromCollege teachingatthe rateofone term’s paidleaveinrespectofeachcompleted sixterms’service,subject tothemakingof satisfactoryarrangements fortheteachingof theirstudents.
  7. MedicalInsurance:Any tutorialFellow whowishes tomayjointhe College’s grouphealthinsurance scheme(BUPA)atthe College’s expense.This is a taxable benefit.
  8. Fellowswhotakeoncertainadministrative roleswithinLincolnCollegemay be eligibleforadditionalpaymentsand/orremissionof someother duties.

Salary

TheUniversitycomponentof the salarywillbe on thescaleforAssociateProfessors(£18,414–

£24,726).ThecombinedCollege andUniversitysalary will beona scaleupto£62,219perannum.

Thoseappointedbelowthetopofthissalaryrangewillreceiveannualincrementsuntil theyreachthetop point.There is also anannual‘cost-of-living’review. In exceptionalcases,theDepartment/FacultyBoardmayproposethe awarding of additionalincrementswithin thesubstantivescaletoan AssociateProfessor atanytimeduring theirappointment.

Additionalremunerationmaybepaidforgraduatesupervision,examining,and some tutorialteaching.Thoseholding administrativeappointmentswithin thedepartment/facultymaybeeligibleforadditionalpayments.
