Lord of All Hopefulness

+OPENING PRAYER AND CONFESSION

The Lord be with you,

And also with you.

Let us pray.

Gracious and loving God, you call each one of us by name, inviting us to accept our status as your beloved children, and to join with you in ministry – loving you and loving our neighbor. And yet, we are confused, resistant, fearful.

You call us to be faithful with our money, God.

We are confused, resistant, fearful.

You call us to recognize our neighbors in need and to care for them.

We are confused, resistant, fearful.

You call us to invest in your future, to trust your promises to restore the land, and to deliver those who love you.

We are confused, resistant, fearful.

We struggle to trust you, God.

Forgive us. Diminish our fears with your

spirit of power, love and strength, and renew us, we pray. Amen.

prayer and song:

This is where children belong.

– James Ritchie

Following the message, children 4 years old to 4th grade may go with their teachers to their Children’s Church. Nursery care is available for our youngest children.

PRAYER BEFORE THE READING

When we ask our questions

You hear us.

When we speak to you

You listen to us.

When we seek you out

You show yourself to us.

When we do not understand

You tell us again.

FIRST READING: 1 Timothy 6:6-19

Actually, godliness is a great source of profit when it is combined with being happy with what you already have.7We didn’t bring anything into the world and so we can’t take anything out of it:8we’ll be happy with food and clothing.9But people who are trying to get rich fall into temptation. They are trapped by many stupid and harmful passions that plunge people into ruin and destruction.10The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some have wandered away from the faith and have impaled themselves with a lot of pain because they made money their goal.

God’s promise to be with us in our troubles, and to rescue us. In Christ we are forgiven.

Thanks be to God!

+RESPONSE No. 842 – Theme I

The Lord Is My Light

Congregation and choir singing together

The Lord is my light, my light and salvation: in God I trust; in God I trust.(Sung three times)

+PASSING THE PEACE

The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you.

11But as for you, man of God, run away from all these things. Instead, pursue righteousness, holy living, faithfulness, love, endurance, and gentleness.12Compete in the good fight of faith. Grab hold of eternal life—you were called to it, and you made a good confession of it in the presence of many witnesses.13I command you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and Christ Jesus, who made the good confession when testifying before Pontius Pilate.14Obey this order without fault or failure until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ.15The timing of this appearance is revealed by God alone, who is the blessed and only master, the King of kings and Lord of lords.16He alone has immortality and lives in light that no one can come near. No human being has ever seen or is able to see him. Honor and eternal power belong to him. Amen.

17Tell people who are rich at this time not to become egotistical and not to place their hope on their finances, which are uncertain. Instead, they need to hope in God, who richly provides everything for our enjoyment.18Tell them to do good, to be rich in the good things they do, to be generous, and to share with others.19When they do these things, they will save a treasure for themselves that is a good foundation for the future. That way they can take hold of what is truly life.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM Pamela Martin/Craig Courtney

My Wordless Prayer

My words lie still and lifeless as dust upon the sand,

I can no longer voice one request or one demand,

My cup of tears is empty, I can no longer cry,

My lips have fallen silent, my prayer is but a sigh.

Spirit come and rest Your ear upon my heart,

O come and hear my wordless prayer,

My silent plea and take them far away from me.

Take them from this heart of mine to the Maker’s

heart divine,

Speak in tones unknown to me that God may hear

and understand.

My voice is weak from calling to You both

night and day.

How long will You be silent? Why do You turn away?

Spirit come and rest Your ear…

Spirit come and rest Your ear upon my heart…

GOSPEL READING: Luke 16:19-31

“There was a certain rich man who clothed himself in purple and fine linen, and who feasted luxuriously every day.20At his gate lay a certain poor man named Lazarus who wascovered with sores.21Lazarus longed to eat the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Instead, dogs would come and lick his sores.

22“The poor man died and was carried by angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.23While being tormented in the place of the dead, he looked up and saw Abraham at a distance with Lazarus at his

On Eagle’s Wings

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings,

bear you on the breath of dawn,

Make you to shine like the sun,

and hold you in the palm of His hand.

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,

who abide in His shadow for life,

Say to the Lord: “My refuge, my Rock in whom I trust”

And He will…

The snare of the fowler will never capture you,

and famine will bring you no fear:

Under His wings your refuge,

His faithfulness your shield. And He will…

You need not fear the terror of the night,

nor the arrow that flies by day:

Though thousands fall about you,

near you it shall not come. And He will…

side.24He shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me. Send Lazarus to dip thetip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I’m suffering in this flame.’25But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received good things, whereas Lazarus received terrible things. Now Lazarus is being comforted and you are in great pain.26Moreover, a great crevasse has been fixed between us and you. Those who wish to cross over from here to you cannot. Neither can anyone cross from there to us.’

27“The rich man said, ‘Then I beg you, Father, send Lazarus to my father’s house.28I have five brothers. He needs to warn them so that they don’t come to this place of agony.’29Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets. They must listen to them.’30The rich man said, ‘No, Father Abraham! But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will change their hearts and lives.’31Abraham said, ‘If they don’t listen to Moses and the Prophets, then neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’”
