Lifts – schedule of work

We now have a schedule of reparations for the lifts that were identified in the summer as requiring new control panels. Whilst we will endeavour to keep the disruption to a minimum it is inevitable that there will be some inconvenience.

It is estimated that each lift repair will take 4 weeks. The work involves stripping out the old control panel, installing a new one (they're about the size of a wardrobe), rewiring the lift shaft push buttons and lift car trailers and then commisioning the lift which means carrying out all the necessary safety checks.

We will endeavour only to have one lift under repair in any one major building at any one time. In most cases there will be an alternative route that can be used to gain access and to relieve pressure on the remaining lift and stairs. These are detailed below.

Chesham: One of the 2 lifts will be out of service from Monday 27 October until Monday 15 December 2003. Alternative routes are via

Horton A stairs

Horton A lift

Chesham B wing stairs from the car park

Chesham C stairs from the middle of the C wing.

Horton D: This lift will be out of service from Monday 8 December or after the repair of the second Chesham lift (whichever is the later) until Monday 12 January 2004. Alternative routes are via Horton A first floor which gives level access or using the Horton D lift serving all 5 floors but not giving level access except at level 0. Staff and students requiring level access to the laboratory/long wing of Horton D should contact their School/Department, the Disabilities Office or Security for advice. This is the most problematic of the non-residential lifts to turn off as there is no real alternative for level access to most of the area it serves. We have chosen to carry out the repairs as far as possible during the vacation to minimise disruption.

Horton A: The lift will be out of service from Monday26 January 2004 until Monday 23 February 2004. Alternatives are as for Chesham excepting Horton A lift. Level access is available from Horton D at level 1.

JBP Building No11 lift:(the original one) This will be out of service from Monday27 October 2003 until Monday 24 November 2003. During this period the Library Extension lift will continue to run unless there is an unrelated and unforeseen problem.

Richmond No1 and No5 lifts (Carlton and Richmond Wings): These will be out of service from Monday 19 January 2004 until Monday 8 March 2004. Work will start first on the lift by the Post Room (No5). It is anticipated that this lift will be back in service by Monday 16 February 2004. As soon as it is operational the service lift (No1) on the Carlton wing will be closed down and repaired.

Bradford Hall: This lift will be out of service from Monday1 December 2003 until Monday 29 December 2003.

University Hall: This lift will be out of service from Monday 5 January 2004 until Monday 2 February 2004.

Richmond Catering and Bars lift (No7): This lift will be out of service from Monday 15 December 2003 until Monday 26 January 2004. During this time goods should be moved via the service lifts on Richmond and Carlton Wings.

Concerns about the programme should be sent to Sue Robinson (email: ). It would be helpful to have the word "lifts" in the subject line.
