Course Outlines: These Science courses are designed to prepare students for success in their future scientific endeavors.

This course will blend reading, writing, and laboratory activities, utilizing individual and group work skills, creativity, problem solving, analytical skills and scientific reasoning. Each student will also be responsible for yearlong research investigations.

Classwork / Homework: Daily assignments consist of bell work (observations), vocabulary, activities (notes, songs, labs, projects) and homework. The purpose of these assignments is to provide both the student and myself an opportunity to assess attainment of the standards and benchmarks. These assignments are graded as exceeding standard (4 points-100%), passing (3 points-75%), approaching (2 points-50%), barely made effort (1 point-25%).

Students often correct their own assignments and have the responsibility of asking questions when necessary. Students are expected to have classwork completed before the beginning of the next class. Assignments not completed by the beginning of the class will be accepted up till the end of the grading period, but for partial credit only. Assignments must include all work. Credit will NOT be given for answers only. Students have been told to contact other students when absent to find out what was missed in class.

Behavior: Phone calls home will be given to students who break rules after a note in the planner. Pencils and paper are given free before the bell without penalty. Please emphasize that side conversations are disruptive to the entire class and are not allowed. To encourage good behavior and cooperation, “Elvis” tickets are given to deserving students for weekly raffles. Overuse of the hall pass and health room will result in parent conference.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be used as formative assessments and will usually be given at least once per week. Like the daily assignments, the purpose of these quizzes is to allow both the student and myself an opportunity to assess attainment of the standards and benchmarks.

Tests: Tests will be given at least once every 5 weeks and are summative assessments. Students may use their notes. Students may take home graded tests for a parent signature. Test grades can be used by the student and parent to assess attainment of all standards and benchmarks. These grades can also be used to give the student and parent a good idea of the overall grade in the class, as Test grades account for 50% of the overall grade. Students may retake tests with parent signature.

Student: I have read the attached syllabus and will discuss it with my parent or guardian. I understand the expectations of this class in regards to academics and behavior. I will use my School Planner to keep track of my assignments. I understand that my teacher and parent may also use it to communicate with each other. I know that it is my responsibility to let my parent or teacher know when there is a message in the notebook. I was given time to write a summary (materials, grades, behavior rules) and reflection (what do you think, what’s easy, what’s a challenge) on the back of this sheet.
