Luisa Piccarreta

Chapter 1

Luisa’s Life

From February 23, 1926 to September 15, 1926

Based on Volume XIX of her Diary

The Joys of Heaven are Communal

Luisa wondered why the Lord often calls her the little newborn of His Holy Will. In response, He clasped her tightly and explained the many reasons why He calls her so.

To be newborn means to be in the act of being born, and Luisa must be reborn in each of her acts in the Divine Will. He calls her to this so He can be repaid for all of the opposition made by human wills to the Divine Volition. He wishes her to be reborn in the Divine Will for as many times as the human will has opposed it.

As Luisa enters into the Divine Will she unites herself with the one single act of the Eternal One, which has no succession of acts, and she remains always in the continuous act of being born. That is the way divine works operate; after they are done once, their continuous act remains, without ever ending. The Lord Himself, though born one time, is born continuously. He is reborn in each consecrated Host, and is reborn whenever a creature returns to the life of His grace. As Luisa is continually reborn in the Divine Will, she is reborn to new beauty, new sanctity, new light, and to new likeness to her Creator. Greater knowledge of the Divine Will is manifested to her, along with infinite graces and joy. The Divinity, in Its turn, feels repaid for the purpose of Creation, since It feels the joys and happiness that the creature was to give It, being returned to It. The Lord surrounds her with so much grace and is careful not to let her human will take the field, in order that she may always be reborn in the Divine Will, and that His Will may be reborn in her (02/23/1926).

Luisa was wasting time by occupying herself with her own thoughts and fears, and the Lord rebuked her for this. She must be attentive, since in the Divine Will one cannot lose or waste time. The Divine Volition is in continuous act which never stops its course, nor can it wait for her. Every time she pays attention to her own fears, she loses an act of His Will. She misses out on a divine act, which embraces everything and everyone, and contains all goods. The Divine Will is not going to wait for her, therefore she must follow it on its continuous course.

Further, Jesus is forced to occupy Himself with pacifying her and erasing her fears, in order to return her to the way of His Will. Also, she deprives her own guardian angel of one more accidental beatitude which he should enjoy, since she is entrusted to his custody. When she is occupied with the Divine Volition, she doubles her angel's paradise of joys since he feels happy in his destiny of having Luisa in his charge. Since the joys of heaven are communal, he offers this accidental beatitude to the whole celestial court, as the fruit of the Divine Will operating in the person he protects. Consequently, all of heaven celebrates and praises the power, sanctity and immensity of the Divine Volition. Therefore Luisa must be attentive and not waste time, since she must follow the act of a God, which is never interrupted (02/28/1926).

The oppressive weight of having to write and manifest all that Jesus tells Luisa caused her to lament to Him that she would rather remain silent forever and say nothing further of all that passes between her and Jesus. But the Lord, moving in her interior, said that her silence on His teachings would mean the burial of the truth. The word about the truth comes from the supreme Fiat, with which He issued the whole Creation. He could have created everything by remaining silent, but He used the word Fiat so that a word too might have divine origin and contain the creative power.

When He tells Luisa all that concerns His Supreme Will, it is not only the actual word, but the Fiat itself, which wants to make known the immense goods that the Divine Volition contains. Entering the field again as in the Creation, it communicates so much power as to be able to form the new Creation of His Will within souls.

Hearing this caused Luisa to be afflicted even more than before, and she prayed to Jesus to give her grace and strength to fulfill His Will. At that moment the heavens were opened to her, and she heard the celestial host say in chorus “Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.” Luisa spontaneously answered with “As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world with end, Amen.” Luisa was immersed in the eternal beatitudes. At the word Father, she saw the creative power flowing everywhere, preserving and giving life to everything, maintaining all Creation beautiful and ever new. At the word Son, she could see all of the works of the Divine Word renewed and in act, giving themselves for the good of creatures. At the words Holy Ghost, Luisa could see all things invested with operative and vivifying love.

Jesus explained why it was appropriate for her to pray the second part of the “Glory be” prayer. By saying it in the Divine Will, she brought the earth up to heaven, in order to give glory to God, in the name of all and together with the celestial court. This is the eternal glory which will never end – “world without end.” Eternal things can be found only in the Divine Will, and one who possesses it is in communication with heaven. The soul in the Divine Will takes part in everything done by the celestial blessed, as though in act together with them (03/02/1926).

Luisa did not understand why Jesus had told her some time ago that He wanted to make of her a copy of the Blessed Virgin Mary, since unlike Mary, she has to reveal in writing the secret communications that take place between her and Jesus. Mary spoke little and kept everything within herself, keeping a secret of all the special graces and heavenly favors that passed between her and her Divine Son. In the Gospel, it is known only that she was His Mother, all else was hidden. But it seems He wants the opposite for Luisa, since she must manifest all that He tells her. Almost fearfully, she clung to Jesus while pouring out to Him her sorrow and pain.

But the Lord clasped her tightly to His Heart, and tenderly told her to have courage and not to fear. It is true that nothing was known about His Mother except that which was necessary and sufficient – that she was the Mother of the Redeemer, who gave her soul completely over to the divine actions. All else, including the favors and graces she received, remained hidden in the bosom of the divine secrets. Only the most important and the greatest thing was known. Being the Mother of Jesus was the greatest honor for her, and raised her above all other creatures. Therefore, since the greatest was known, it was not necessary for the lesser things to be made known (03/06/1926).

Acts done in the Divine Will operate Continuously

While immersed in the Divine Will, Luisa began to contemplate the great beauty, order and harmony of the Creation. All created things carry the seal of God's love toward man, and they cry out in their mute language for man to love in turn the One who so much loves him. Luisa became so enchanted in seeing so much love within all Creation, that her wounded heart caused her to feel faint.

But the Lord sustained her in His arms, telling her that all Creation gives forth mute glory and adoration for God, and it silently sings the praises of the power, beauty and magnificence of its Creator. The Creation is the outpouring of the Divine Being, and it serves man as a mirror in order to see and to know his Creator. It teaches him sublime lessons of order, harmony, sanctity and love. From the greatest to the smallest work that came out of the Divine hands, the Creator gives as many lessons to man for as many things as He created.

But while the things of Creation silently give forth their glory and mute praises of God, they were not given the freedom to either grow or decrease from the way they were created. But it was not so in the creation of man. God's love for man surpassed all the love He had for the rest of His Creation. He did not wish man to remain like the rest of created things, mute and fixed at the point at which they were issued by God. Man was to grow ever more in riches, love, glory and the likeness of His Creator. Therefore he was endowed with memory, reason and will, and the Divine Will was placed at his disposal.

But the sorrow of the Most High was great in seeing these great goods rejected by the creature. Therefore after many years the Divinity placed these goods into play once again, and everything was entrusted to the Immaculate Virgin. This time the creature did not fail, and through the Holy Virgin the Sun of the Redemption arose in order to save lost humanity. In a similar way, the Lord wishes through Luisa to make the Sun of the Divine Will rise again in the midst of creatures. The Lord told Luisa that just as Mary placed the little flame of her own will at the foot of the Supreme Majesty in order to receive in return the Divine Will, now it is Luisa's turn to copy her Holy Mother. Then, in an instant Luisa found herself before the inaccessible light of the Divinity. She placed her own will, in the shape of a little flame, beside that of the Celestial Queen at the foot of the throne of the Most High. But she could write no more of what she saw and comprehended, since she lacked the appropriate words.

Jesus explained that now that He has won the little flame of her own will, she has won in turn the Divine Will. There is a great difference between the human and Divine Wills, such that an act done in the Divine Volition remains always in the act of being done. It is not subject to interruption; after it is done once it is done forever, as if it were operating continuously. The soul in the Divine Will operates in the ways of the divine operating – the same act is in continuous operation with no need of repeating it (03/09/1926).

♦♦♦

Dissolving herself in the Divine Will, Luisa wished that she could embrace and bring the entire Creation to God as if it were her very own, in order to give Him, for each created thing, an act of love, adoration and thanksgiving. Then Jesus, coming out from within her interior, presented her the whole Creation as a gift. He told her that for one who lives in His Will, everything that was issued from the Divine Fiat, and which His Will preserves and possesses, is fully hers by right. It was His Fiat that extended the heavens, and created all things, and the person who has won the Divine Will has won the whole Creation, including God Himself. Therefore it is right and just that she possesses all that His Will possesses.

The Lord made Creation mute and silent towards its Creator, since He wished that the creature for whom it was made, man, would be the one to speak on behalf of all created things. So Luisa, in the Divine Volition, will be the voice of the heavens, of each star, of the wind, the plants, the mountains – of everything! The voice of Luisa, the newborn of His Will, will render the entire Creation speaking, making it more beautiful than if He had given it the use of the word. The Lord loves her so much that He wants to hear her voice in each created thing – loving, adoring, and glorifying the One who created them. Therefore she must be attentive, since her mission is a great one. The life of His Will must be carried out in her, embracing and possessing everything.

Afterward, Luisa began to ponder how it could possibly be that she, merely a newborn in His Will, would be able to diffuse herself in all created things, as Jesus wants. He should at least let her grow a little bit more. But the Lord told her not to be surprised at being newborn in His Will. The Immaculate Virgin herself is a newborn of the Divine Will, because in comparison to what God is, and what the creature can be and can take from God, even His Mother can be called a little newborn. As the newborn of His Will, she was formed in the likeness of her Creator, and became Queen of all Creation, dominating everything. By the power and life of the Divine Will which she possessed, she was able to do and impetrate all things. God could not deny her anything that she asked, since it was His own Supreme Volition, operating in her, that was actually asking (03/14/1926).

Luisa wondered how she would be able copy what the Heavenly Mother had done, and impetrate the coming of the longed for Fiat, just as Mary had impetrated the coming of the Redeemer. Mary was holy and conceived without sin, while Luisa considered herself to be the littlest and poorest of all creatures, and was conceived with original sin. She was full of miseries and weaknesses like all the children of Adam.

But the Lord, moving within her, said that it was right and decorous for Mary to be conceived immaculately, since not even a seed of guilt could ever co-exist with the one who was to conceive the Eternal Word and become His Mother. Since He was to receive her blood while conceived within her womb, it was proper that both her soul and body would exhibit purity and clarity, and that she be enriched with all possible graces, prerogatives and privileges.

So too Luisa, chosen to impetrate the Fiat, was to receive so much grace in order to insure that the knowledge of the Divine Will, and its very Life, would not be placed in a corrupted soul and body. Although His Will did not exempt her from original sin, it repressed and crushed any inclination to sin so that it would not produce its corrupted effects. This was necessary for the decorum and sanctity of the Supreme Will, which would be hindered from spreading its rays of truth and light if there were the smallest shadow in Luisa. The Divine Volition is so pure, clear and holy that it cannot adapt itself to living together with the slightest spot.
