A fact is a statement that can be proved true or false.

Yikes!

I am reading a GREAT story, but I don’t know this word!! What should I do??

I KNOW!

I will be a reading detective!

I will look for CONTEXT CLUES!

Look at the words AROUND the word you don’t know to see if they can help.

Use other words around it to figure out another meaning. Try the new meaning in the sentence. Does it make sense?

Other ways to find out what the word is are to try:

Looking in a dictionary or glossary.

Look at the word parts.

You might understand the “base” word and an ending. When you put this information together it might give you the meaning of an unknown word.

Sometimes we can look for context clues in words and sentences around the unknown word.
