HIGHLIGHTS
With senior Ro’Daijah Faucette out due to illness, senior Samirah Stephens led the short handed Cummings girls to a 2nd place finish in the 7 schools meet. Determined to make her final year at Cummings one to remember, Samirah has established at least on personal record in all 5 meets she competed in this season. Wednesday she won the 55 meter hurdles by over 2 seconds, the 500 meter dash by over 8 seconds and the triple jump by over 4 feet. Her hurdles and 500 times were personal records with the 500 time being the 3rd fastest ever by a Cummings girl.
Sophomore Katherine Aguilar also continued to establish herself as the best girl distance runner in Cummings history. Already the owner of the fastest 3200 meter run time, her 2nd place time of 6:09.84 is a personal record and the 4th fastest by a Cummings girl.
Sophomore Lakia Brown placed 3rd in the 55 meter and 300 meter dashes. Her time of 46.61 was a significant personal record for her.
Also shining for the Lady Cavs was Sha’Lena Spikes who won the shot put with a state qualifying throw of 31-7.
Junior Isaiah Moore and senior Thomas Jones II are the 1st and 2nd ranked hurdlers in North Carolina. They also hold the 1st and 5th rankings nationally. Isaiah has the 2 races run on indoor tracks this season while Thomas has won the 3 races, including this one, run outdoors. Their times 8.04 and 8.18 were slow by their standards but still almost a second faster than their closest competition. Both athletes have been chosen for the elite 60 meter hurdle race at the Milesplit Holiday Invitational at the JDL Fast Track on December 29th.
Sophomore Jeremy Griffis seems to be rounding into form after a bout with the flu and a less than satisfying performance this past weekend in Virginia. Wednesday he ran an excellent 500 meter dash in which he was in complete control for most of the race. Although he would eventually place 2nd, his 1:12.61 time is an encouraging 7 seconds drop from his time in Virginia.
