POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position title: Teacher-Librarian
Reports to: Resource Centre Co-ordinator / Location: Senior SchoolResource Centre
Primary purpose of the position:
To manage the day-to-day running of the Senior School Library and provide teaching and technical support in the delivery of information services to the Senior and Junior School Libraries
Key result Areas and Tasks: / Key Performance Indicators:
1.Administration
  • Assist withthe delivery of prompt and effective information services for staff and students;
  • Assist students with research and other requests, encouraging a positive environment of curiosity and investigation;
  • Assist with Desk duty as required to encourage a welcoming and supportive library environment;
  • Assist with the supervisionof students and teaching of information and literacy skills classes in the Library;
  • Assist with supervision in the Resource Centre before and after school (until 5.00pm) as required;
  • Managethe daily returns and regular shelving and collection maintenance, including organisation of resources, to ensure that the library is tidy and well-maintained and that resources are accessibleas required;
  • Organise effective daily Library administration including managing the booking systems for the Library and Theatre;
  • Manage the Oliver database including:
Liaising with Softlink on behalf of the Senior School and Junior School Libraries;
  • Managing the circulation of resources, including regular follow-up of overdue and lost items according to established procedures;
  • Co-ordinating the annual stocktake for both the Senior and Junior School libraries, including any follow up / correction of the catalogue and resources;
  • Assisting in Faculty collection maintenance and audits;
  • Editing catalogue records as required to suit ongoing and changing curriculum developments;
  • Other regular updates and reviews of the catalogue to ensure that it is consistent and meets the needs of the School curriculum;
  • Organise displays in Resource Centre and Theatre and liaise with staff in the planning and preparation of displays, including in the Junior School Library;
  • Assist in the preparation of programs and information for Library events, including the Fintona Writers’ Festival;
  • Assist with selection of print and online resources, according to Collection Development criteria and the requirements of the School curriculum;
  • Manage the cataloguing of fiction, non-fiction and teacher reference items, including the maintenance of the ebook collection;
  • Process all print resources for the library and teacher reference;
  • Publicise and promote new materials to staff and students;
  • Manage the ordering, cataloguing and regular distribution of print and onlinerenewals for all subscriptions and memberships owned by the School, including the daily newspapers;
  • Maintain access for all databases and other selected electronic resources on inFintona and make recommendations for future purchases according to Curriculum and IT requirements;
  • Liaise with, and support the Junior School library staff in the completion of relevant cataloguing and other collection maintenance tasks as required;
  • Act as liaison with the PYP Co-ordinator – attending PYP planning and other PYP meetings and sharing information as required, including the preparation of relevant documentation;
  • Maintain Policies and Procedures documentation relevant to the role;
  • Act as advocate of the library and services to the School community;
  • Be involved in key planning and strategic library development;
  • Other duties as appropriate and as directed by the Principal

2. Learning community
  • Attend relevant Professional Development activities;
  • Maintain awareness of current trends and publications in Young Adult literature through reading of professional magazines and reading new material purchased by the Resource Centre;
  • Attend staff meetings and in-services as required, (unless required to supervise Resource Centre);
  • Make appropriate recommendations to students and staff in the selection of reading material;
  • Provide AV trouble shooting assistance as required;
  • Provide support to students and staff with use of technology in the Library;
  • Provide support to students and staff with the use of technology in the Theatre as required;

3. Curriculum
  • Assist in the preparation of classes and teaching of Research Skills, Information skills and Literacy-based activities in conjunction with the Resource Centre Co-ordinator;
  • Assist in the preparation and teaching of timetabled PYP research and literature classes, including liaising and planning with teaching staff as required (including attending PYP planning meetings);
  • Able to be flexible and step in to assist with Library classes as the need arises;
  • Compile and maintain research support, reading lists, and other material for specific curriculum tasks, including the PYP Units of Inquiry, on inFintona; and assist with suggestions for the development of the Library pages (both Senior School and Junior
School );
  • Review these with the Resource Centre Co-ordinator on a regular basis against the developing ICT and Information Skills Scope and Sequence documents;
  • Manage the class sets collections for the Book Chat program in Years 5 and 6, and the Literature Circle program in Years 7 and 8;
  • Support and assist in the development programs, including an integrated Information Research Skills program and other future projects that require the teaching of information skills;
  • Participate in the selection and organisation of information sources to suit current and future curriculum needs.

/ Key Selection Criteria: Mandatory
  • Diploma of Library/Information Services [or equivalent] allowing for membership of ALIA.;
  • Experience with relevant Library Systems;
  • Experience in a school library;
  • A current and assured knowledge of appropriate content relevant to role;
  • On-going knowledge of children’s and young adult literature;
  • Current and ongoing knowledge of AV and ICT equipment;
  • Strong computer skills;
  • A sound knowledge and experience in the use of electronic resources;
  • Relevant knowledge of learning technologies in relation to the role;
  • Current Working with Children Check.
