Prediction Can, Dory Story

Link / Prediction is a fundamental reading strategy that all good readers use. Students will review prediction strategies that they have learned in the classroom and library. They will view items from the prediction can to make predictions about the book to be read to them.
Assessment: Student responses
Engage
and Educate / Review the definition of prediction and why good readers predict. Show students the prediction can. Tell them that instead of making predictions about the book by looking at the front cover. They will be making predictions based on the items in the coffee can.
Assessment: Student responses
Active Learning / 1.  One by one show the class items in the prediction can. As each item is shown, ask students to identify the item.
2.  After the items are correctly identified, ask students to make predictions about the story. This could also be done as a pair-share activity. List the predictions on the white board. (Make sure the predictions include the problem to be solved and are not simply a list of the items in the can.) Tell students we will revisit their predictions after the story is read.
3.  Read Dory Story by Jerry Pallotta.
4.  Review the predictions on the whiteboard to see if they are correct. Remind students that good readers constantly revise their predictions while reading or listening to a story.
Assessment: Student responses
Reflect / Ask students to identify other items that could have gone in the prediction can to help them make predictions about the story.
Now and Then / Encourage students to continue making predictions about stories before and while they read. Tell them throughout the school year, as they read/listen to more books, we will talk about the predictions they initially made and how they revised them as they continued to listen/read more of the story.
