1. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Accounting is the language of business! This is a beginning course for those students preparing for college work in business management or business administration or for those students interested in a business career in the field of accounting. It is also a useful course for those who wish to work in the office-skills-related fields and for those who are considering operating their own businesses. Emphasis is placed upon the reasons and the purpose of accounting rather than on mechanical procedure alone. Students are expected to be able to journalize, post, prepare a trial balance and financial statements. In addition, the computer lab will be available so that students will be able to apply their accounting skills using a computer.

2. PRIMARY LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After completion of the course the students will be able to:

A.  Demonstrate mastery in knowledge and usage of the accounting equation

B.  Analyze the difference between various financial statements i.e. general journal and general ledger

C.  Grasp the increasing complexities in accounting from sole proprietorship to corporation

D. Understand and implement the different ways a business communicates (verbal and nonverbal)

E. Describe and understand the effects the US government has on accounting

3. COURSE FORMAT:

This class will have a varied format. This course will strive to be as interactive as possible and will integrate multimedia formats into classroom learning. In addition to lectures, important class components will consist of presentations, videos, in-class discussions, team activities, case analysis, guest speakers (if possible) simulations, role-plays. All work will be done in the computer lab and student work will be complete with the Aplia program. Students will be expected to use computers to help complete papers, projects, and to conduct research.

4. CLASSROOM POLICIES:

a.  Attendance/Tardy: Regular attendance in this course is critical to success. Significant absences/tardies from class can impact your grade.

b.  Participation: Participation in group work and class discussions is critical in this course. Please note that 10% of the student’s grade is based on participation.

c.  Electronics: Students are expected to ensure that when class begins all cell phones, psps, ipods, etc are turned off and put away.

d.  Food: In order to protect the classroom and computer lab equipment, food is not allowed in class and bottled water is the ONLY acceptable beverage.

e.  Class Time: Class will begin and end promptly at the bell. Students should take their seats at the start bell and should NOT begin to leave until they hear the stop bell.

f.  Teacher’s absence: The teacher’s absence at the start of class NEVER means class is cancelled; students must wait until the proxy arrives.

g.  Courtesy: Students are expected to show respect for their peers, faculty and guests. Any behavior that detracts from class learning will be addressed and sanctioned on a case-by-case basis.

h.  Late Homework Assignments: All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date due. Assignments not turned in on time are subject to the following penalties:

i.  1-24 hours late: 25% penalty

ii.  24 – 48 hours late: 50% penalty

iii.  More than 48 hours late: grade will be no higher than 40%

Late Major Assignments: All major assignments will lose 10% a day until it is an F. Assignments will still be accepted after the 5th day for some credit.

i. Make-up: In the event of an excused absence, make up work will be provided to the student PROVIDED the STUDENT takes the initiative to come to the teacher and request the work.

j. Extra Help: Extra help is available before school, after school, or during the teachers’ free periods. Extra help will always be provided when the student makes an appointment with the teacher.

k.  LHS Honor Code: Students are expected to follow the LHS honor code at all times during this course. Cheating and plagiarism are considered violations of the code. Please refer to the student handbook for details on the honor code.

5.  LHS Attendance Policy: Please review the LHS attendance policy in the Student/Parent hand book.

6. GRADE BREAKDOWN:

Grades for the year will be calculated by averaging each quarter’s grade. While slight variations may occur from quarter to quarter based upon the number of projects, papers and exams completed during the quarter, students will generally be graded on the following scale below. Further details, descriptions and requirements for specific projects, exams and assignments will be forthcoming as the school year progresses. Students will be informed well in advance regarding how the grade for each assignment will be derived.

Current Events / 5% / Student should expect 2 or 3 Current Events assignments
Total Grade / 100%

Each Quarter will be worth 23% of the final grade and the Final Exam will be worth 8%

7. TEXTBOOK AND MATERIALS

The textbook for this course is Century 21 Accounting by Ross, Gilbertson, Lehman and Hanson. Students will be responsible for maintaining their own copies of class handouts and reference guides. Students are strongly advised to bring a dedicated course notebook to class and a pen or pencil with which to take notes.
