2.Business arising from previous minutes.

2.1 Business Pack update.

Vanessa advised that Insp Johnston was currently working on collating information and had circulated some detail on what people can and can’t do when they are confronted by a shop- lifter. This information is helpful and should be included in the new business pack.

2.2 Youth Justice Court processes- Jane Douglas.

  • Jane provided the group with an overview of the processes involved in Youth Justice including the system used to deal with first time offenders through to repeat offenders.
  • Luke explained to Jane his issue in lack of follow up in regard to the outcomes of community service conferences. Jane explained that follow up on outcomes from the conferences are reported to the police who decided whether or not to take action.
  • It was noted by the group that businesses felt there was a lack in follow up once offenders had been charged or dealt with, suggesting that we look at ways to improve communication of the relevant informationback to businesses.

2.3 Retail loss prevention workshop

Vanessa advised that Cityprom had received quotes for a loss prevention workshop and will finalise details in the coming month.

2.4 Conflict Management Workshop

Vanessa advised that Cityprom has received a proposal for Maybo to run conflict management workshops, Cityprom is currently investigating the possibility of whether a local business is able to co-ordinate the workshops. Cityprom will also call for expressions of interest from members in regard to participation in the workshops.

2.5 Anti-theft campaign

Luke and Vanessa have been unable to speak with anyone about LC media class involvement on the proposed anti-theft campaign. Tamara and Alison suggested that we could approach their youth groups for some input.

2.6Update on CCTV camera progress.

There is no news on camera upgrades and new installations from City of Launceston. Federal funding is still being sought for additional coverage. Cityprom will ask members to provide feedback on any areas they feel may benefit from coverage.

2.7CBD ban update-Insp Johnstone (telephone conference).

Insp Johnson has asked that the group consider details of the proposed ban which includes the following:

  • Which businesses participate, how is this communicated?
  • What will the timeframes be for the bans?
  • What type of letter head will be used to represent the ban, individual business or group?

The group will discuss these issues via email in the coming weeks and Vanessa will draft in to a document for final approval by all.

3Agenda items:

3.1Beacon Foundation business program overview- Sarah Courtney MP

  • Sarah explained to the schools program that Beacon was currently working on, there may be opportunities for additional businesses to become involved. This would entail mentoring, assistance with CV’s etc.
  • The group suggested Vanessa speak with Shirreen from Brooks High and Derek Adams from Whitelion to investigate other opportunities for business to engage with young people.

3.2Working with Headspace-Alison Filgate

Alison spoke about the work headspace is doing and provided feedback on issues in the CBD from some of the youths involved with the organisation. Some of the suggestions included enforce smoking ban, getting rid of the free Wi-Fi, creating some ‘chill out’ space specifically for kids in the city, introduction of security guards and moving the location of current bus stops. Vanessa will meet with Alison to further discuss the input of the kids into the project group.
