Lyn Watson

B.App.Sci. Phty., Grad.Dip.Manip.,M.P.A.A., Sports Physio.

Lyn Watson of Melbourne, Australia is a Clinical Manipulative Physical Therapist and titled Sports Physiotherapist. She is Clinical Specialist at LifeCare Prahran Sports Medicine Centre and Melbourne Orthopaedic Group. Lyn has conducted clinical research into taping techniques, the frozen shoulder, hydrodilatation, thoracic outlet syndrome, glenohumeral joint instability, scapula biomechanics and clinical outcome measures. Lyn has published papers in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and British Journal of Sports Medicine on the Frozen Shoulder, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, scapular biomechanics and glenohumeral joint instability outcome measures. Since 1992 Lyn has conducted shoulder workshops throughout Australia, Canada, Asia, USA and the United Kingdom. Ms Watson also lectures on the Masters Manipulative Therapy and Sports programmes for both Melbourne and Latrobe Universities. Lyn is currently enrolled in a clinical doctorate programme and is supervising doctoral students in areas of research including rotator cuff pathology and EMG analysis of normative and patient populations. For the last 23 years Lyn has worked exclusively in the area of the shoulder and is the clinical specialist in an elite surgical team.

Lyn has developed extensive clinical experience in the diagnosis, assessment and rehabilitation of shoulder injuries and is a specialist consultant to the Australian Cricket Team. She has treated a wide range of elite athletes including Olympic swimmers, water polo players, tennis player and paddlers but also specializes in more common shoulder conditions such as rotator cuff pathologies and the stiff shoulder. Lyn has also conducted research into the long term clinical outcome of many surgical and conservative management strategies that are commonly employed. She has developed a unique, logical and progressive approach to assessment and rehabilitation techniques.

Introduction and Course Philosophy

This course offers the opportunity to gain extensive clinical insight into the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and progression of shoulder rehabilitation from a specialist shoulder physiotherapist. The course is extensively based on current research and provides “cutting edge” information as to new treatment techniques that are available as well as evidence-based practices that therapists can integrate. The course will provide the therapist with many mobilisation and taping techniques, that have immediate clinical application. It will also teach a logical assessment strategy for glenohumeral and scapulothoracic mechanics that will form a framework around which the therapist can diagnose specific muscle dysfunction and select appropriate rehabilitation strategies. The course provides the structure to allow for development of clinical reasoning skills applicable to many common shoulder pathologies. The course will also explore what is and what is not substantiated by research in common clinical practice both in conservative and surgical treatment of the shoulder.

Course Objectives

  1. For the participant to gain a firm understanding and knowledge of clinical anatomy biomechanics and how they relate to shoulder pathology.
  2. To present a synopsis of common subjective findings and symptom pattern presentation in specific conditions.
  3. To gain a detailed knowledge and hands-on practice at glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joint assessment.
  4. To gain a detailed knowledge of glenohumeral joint instability, clinical presentations, assessment techniques and management strategies.
  5. To examine the different causes of glenohumeral joint stiffness and learn specific mobilisation techniques.
  6. To examine the clinical patterns of presentation of different forms of rotator cuff pathology.
  7. To demonstrate strengthening regimes for glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joints – including a logical progression pattern.
  8. To demonstrate taping techniques for glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joints.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the course, the participant should be:

·  Developing an extensive understanding of shoulder anatomy, biomechanics and function and be able to apply this to a patient’s clinical presentation.

·  Developing an understanding of pathomechanics of shoulder injury and dysfunction and be able to apply this to both a patient’s clinical presentation and selection of logical assessment and treatment strategies.

·  Able to subjectively and objectively assess both glenohumeral and scapulothoracic regions. This information can be applied to both the initial evaluation, where rehabilitation strategies are formulated, and to subsequent examinations where the effects of intervention can be assessed.

·  Developing skills in dynamically assessing both the glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joint.

·  Developing an understanding of the pathomechanics of many common shoulder pathologies such as glenohumeral joint instability, frozen shoulders, localized contracture, rotator cuff tears, SLAP lesions and impingement.

·  Be able to assess specifically for all components of glenohumeral joint instability.

·  Be able to specifically mobilize the glenohumeral joint for all patterns of capsular contracture.

·  Be able to specifically assess for glenohumeral and scapulothoracic muscle dysfunction and/or inhibition and be able to selectively retrain these muscle groups from a base level up to a full functional capacity. This involves the use of specific assessment and treatment principles and techniques developed by Lyn Watson.

·  Be able to selectively assess for rotator cuff pathology, differentially diagnose impingement pain and have a clear understanding of the different treatment strategies that can be employed.

·  Gaining an appreciation of the need for evidence based clinical outcome data.

·  Be able to understand the role and interaction of surgical interventions with shoulder pathology and be able to develop logically based post operative treatment regimes.

·  Be able to perform tape techniques that assist in treatment of shoulder problems.
