Letter-writing fundraiser

+++++++++++++++

As previously noted, everyone is required to do private fundraising to raise $100. This has traditionally been done in the form of a letter-writing campaign requesting donations. Instructions for writing these letters is below, however you may choose to raise this extra $100 any way you want (babysitting, mowing lawns, lemonade stands, etc.)

FAQ's:

  • Can I raise more than $100? Of course! Many have received more than $100 in letter-writing contributions, even upwards of $500!! As you can see from the financial report below, every little bit helps! $100 is really a minimum goal.
  • Can I just give you $100? You should try the letter-writing route first. If you ask for $20 from just 5 people, you've already met the goal! But if after your letter-writing efforts you come up short then it's fine to supplement with your own finances.
  • What if I really can't come up with $100? We can always work something out – just talk to me about the situation.

LETTER-WRITING INSTRUCTIONS:

See the next page for a sample letter to get an idea of how to write one. Here are some general thoughts:

-It's simple! Tell them what Work Camp is and why you want to go!

-Use your own words, don’t just copy the sample letter word-for-word

-Be up front about the cost and what kind of support you're looking for. It costs about $400 per person to go to Work Camp. You're trying to raise $100 through donations. If you write 5 letters that's just $20 each, a very manageable amount.

-If you are able to acquire more than $100, go for it! 10 letters asking for $20 will double your contribution! Your extra contribution may help supplement those who can’t raise as much.

-Checks should be addressed to St. John's (memo: Work Camp), but should be sent to you. That way you'll know who contributed and you will know to thank them!

-Finally, thank those who donate!

DUE DATE?

You can turn money that you receive in to me any time as you receive it. Please make your best effort to have the money turned in by Easter Sunday – April 4th.

Dear Aunt Susie,

This summer I will be joining my youth group for a week with Catholic Heart Workcamp. Catholic Heart Workcamp is an organization that coordinates service projects throughout the nation. This year, my group is going to Knoxville, TN. We will be serving the community there and doing everything from repairing houses to working in soup kitchens. Our accommodations are not much (we stay in a high school all week) but it is an opportunity for us to learn to sacrifice and share what we have with others.

I went last year and really had an amazing experience (or…This is my first year going with the Church and am excited about it!) Catholic Heart Workcamp not only sets our group up with service projects, but we meet other teens from all over the country. We also have prayer, Mass, and opportunities to grow in our faith. The part about camp that affected me the most last year was… (the part I’m looking forward to the most is…)

We have already been fundraising as a group, of course, but we still have a long way to go! We have been each asked to write friends and family like you to help make this trip possible. We will be renting vans to drive together and carry our gear. We also purchase any tools we may not have and pay for our accommodations and meals. Any amount that you can give would really help us – we have sixty people in our group this year!

Thank you for your help. The most important help you can give, though, is to pray for our group and the people we will be serving! Please pray that our experience will be blessed and that we will be open to all that God has planned for us. We will keep you and your family in our prayers as well!

If you decide to make a contribution by check, please make it out to “St. John the Apostle” with “Work Camp” in the memo. You can send the check to me at the address below.

May God bless you!

Sincerely,
