PROPOSED:
7. D. Play-offs
Singles playoff bracket should be standard crossover similar to that of the doubles bracket.
Rational:
- Second place finishers in the pools should still have an opportunity to win a Zone gold medal.
- Old bracket did not allow for this.
- Created uneven number of games played/won based on finishing in pools
- Second place finisher in a pool would win more games to get the silver medal than someone that had finished first. This led to issues with banner points.
- Old bracket actually had 9 matches where the proposed bracket will only have 8 and importantly will not have athletes sitting for full rounds waiting for their opponents (who will have played multiple back to back minimum break matches).
- Confusing bracket. In four years of coaching with this bracket, two of which running the tournament we have had issues with players leaving when they still have games to play.
- Tends to happen when first seeds lose and go down in the old bracket, they would lose in the playoffs and assume they are done.
- Standardization with ASAA provincials. This bracket is similar to the one that is used in provincials and it seems that at the zone level we should have our players familiar with single loss cross over brackets.
MOVED TO TABLE until the Fall Meeting. Ken McMurray (Cardston)
5. Section XI – BADMINTON Submitted by Shane Colpitts (Chinook)
Current: One point is awarded for each game won in the round robin and play-off matches. In Singles, additional points were awarded to the teams gold-medal teams to equalize the number of games played by the remaining teams.
Note: this is current practice and is not written in the Constitution
Proposed:
Add 9. Banner points will be awarded according to the following structure
- 1 point for every match won in the round robin and the playoff bracket
- Medal points awarded as follows
- 3 for each gold
- 2 for each silver
- 1 for each bronze
Rational:
- Should be a formal policy in place that is fair and understood.
- System needs to be consistent for singles and doubles events
- Awarding points for medals allows small teams with competitive athletes to compete for a banner against teams with a greater number of athletes.
- Having set system that is understood may allow for awarding of banners immediately following zone competitions, similar to other zone sports and similar to provincials for badminton.
- Having a set structure can help build the team aspect of badminton as then all members understand how they contribute to team success as well as individual success.
SECOND: Randy Whitehead (Matthew Halton) CARRIED
