Final Project

Lesson: Research and Oral Presentation (Power Point) on Shakespeare Unit

English (literature)

Grades 9-12

Timeframe: 3-4 weeks during class study of the particular Shakespeare play

(9th grade – Romeo and Juliet)

(10th grade –A Midsummer Night’s Dream)

(11th grade – Macbeth)

(12th grade – Hamlet)

Aim:How can we demonstrate our knowledge and understanding of Shakespearean history and share it with others?

Instructional Objectives:

  • Students will do independent research on any aspect of Shakespearean study and/or any aspect of the history of the performance of the play being studied.
  • Students will incorporate and present their research via a power-point presentation.

Student Objectives:

  • Students will independently learn about Shakespeare the man, the theatre of his day, the politics/history of the late 1500’s/early 1600’s, etc.
  • Students will choose their particular research subject from a teacher-provided list of acceptable topics.
  • Students will be given time in the school library to research both on line and in the stacks.
  • Students will be given time in the school’s computer lab to put together a power point presentation.
  • Students will learn/practice power point preparation.
  • Students will present their oral presentations to the class following a rubric.
  • Students will grade one another based on that rubric.

Procedure:

Week 1: Students will choose their individual topics and be provided with grading rubric.

Weeks 1& 2: Students will be brought to library and will, with assistance from teacher and librarian, research their individual topics.

Weeks 2 & 3: Students will be urged to continue their research on their own (no additional homework will be assigned).

Weeks 3 & 4: Students will be brought to computer lab in order to complete their power point presentations with assistance from teacher and computer lab specialist.

Week 5: Presentations during which students will grade one another using grading rubric.

Required of Students:

a) 3-5 page paper on the topic

b) Bibliography of works cited and those used but not cited

c) Minimum two minute power point presentation containing:

1)important facts

2)at least 10 screens

3)music

4)at least 2 visuals

5)reference to at least 2 links or books

6)a variety of type faces

7)a variety of backgrounds

8)at least 3 visual effects

Teacher must arrange for use of:

1)Library

2)Computer room with power point software

3)Computer/smart board hook-up for presentations
