Probability / NC Level:
6 Identify outcomes for a combination of two experiments
Resources:
IWB - Smartboard (Hare and Tortoise)
-  Catch Me website
-  MyMaths, probability, outcomes
Laminated probability cards
Counters, Dice, Board for game
Worksheet / Support staff:
N/A
Learning Objectives:
List all the outcomes for single events, and for two successive events in a systematic way.
Use sample space diagrams for two successive events.
Compare experimental and theoretical probabilities. / Key vocabulary:
Probability
Likelihood
Sample space
experiment
Time:
10-15
mins / Starter:
Probability cards (Success for All standards Unit)
Ask pupils to read through cards in pairs and discuss whether they are true or false, or if they are unsure.
Discuss some of the pupils answers and reasoning. This should highlight some common misconceptions (see unit lesson plan for more details)

10 / Main activity:
Go through rules for Hare and Tortoise game.
Who do you think will win? Don’t discuss reasons yet.
Pupils play game in pairs, recording their results on the board.
What is the experimental probability that the hare/tortoise will win?
Why is the hare most likely to win? Is this what you expected? Why / why not?
Look at sample space diagram,
MyMaths slide 4 goes through working out some probabilities.
Worksheet
10 / Plenary:
Mark worksheet.
Return to the game.
Can you calculate the probability that the hare/tortoise wins?
Can you make the game fair? Explain your working.
Lesson will lead to:
Work on using sample space diagrams in other contexts.
Comparing experimental and theoretical probability.
Monitoring and assessment:
The starter highlights many misconceptions to do with probability. Some will be tackled in this lesson. Others may have to be returned to in future lessons.
Other assessment can be carried out on the pupils’ work on the worksheet and the discussion in the plenary.
