INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE
Phase One: Engage the Learner
Activity:
“Who can give me an example of two words that mean the same thing?” (Synonyms – relaxed calm, loud noisy) “Who can tell me what the opposite of those words might be?” (Antonyms – relaxed tensed, loud quiet)
“This book is kind of like a dictionary where you look up certain words. Instead of looking up the definition, you are looking up synonyms and antonyms.”
1. Allow each student to get on a computer and go to the online thesaurus website 2. Demonstrate the use of the online thesaurus, asking appropriate questions so each child may demonstrate his understanding of using the thesaurus. 3. Bring into discussion the fact that some words have similar meanings and some words mean the opposite of another word.
What’s the teacher doing?
The teacher is explaining to the students the concept of an antonym versus a synonym. (A synonym is any two words that have the same meaning. An antonym is any two words that have opposite meanings). After the students understand the concept of each, the teacher is instructing the students how to use an online thesaurus. / What are the students doing?
The students are reviewing their understanding of synonyms and antonyms by constructing possible synonyms and antonyms as a class. After reviewing the topic, the students are becoming familiar with how to use an online thesaurus, with needed assistance from the teaching, to look up certain words’ antonyms and synonyms.
Phase Two: Explore the Concept
Activity:
4. After becoming familiar with the online thesaurus, the students work together with the teacher to look up a set of words in the thesaurus to determine the synonyms and antonyms associated with certain words. Before using the thesaurus to determine the synonyms and antonyms associated with each word, the teacher asks the students to make predictions about possible synonyms and antonyms that they can think of on their own, without the help of the thesaurus. After making possible antonym and synonym guesses, the students look up sample words in the online thesaurus to see if their predictions were accurate. This concept is familiarizing the students with how to use a thesaurus with guided help and instruction from the teacher.
What’s the teacher doing?
The teacher is giving the students a list of words that he/she can assist with looking up in the online thesaurus to determine the words’ synonyms and antonyms. The teacher is walking around the classroom observing the students’ predictions and then assisting them if their predictions may have been incorrect. / What are the student’s doing?
The students are making possible predictions of synonyms and antonyms associated with words, before looking them up in the online thesaurus. The students are looking up the words that the teacher has instructed them to look up in the online thesaurus. The students are becoming familiar with how to use an online thesaurus in determining the antonyms and synonyms of a word through trial and error.
Phase Three: Explain the Concept and Define the Terms
Activity:
The teacher explains to the students that they will be playing synonym/antonym BINGO. The teacher explains that he/she will be writing a list of sixteen words (possibly this week’s spelling or vocabulary words) on the board. Once the students have seen the list of words they are to think about possible synonyms or antonyms associated with each word. They are to make predictions about possible synonyms or antonyms that they may find in the online thesaurus associated with these words. The students then use the online thesaurus to look up synonyms and antonyms associated with each of the sixteen words written on the board (hopefully matching their predictions). The students are instructed to choose one synonym and one antonym associated with each word and type it onto their online BINGO card. Example: The word written on the board is “up”. Students choose an antonym and synonym of up on their BINGO board; down would appear on the antonym side of the BINGO board, and ascend would appear on the synonym side of their BINGO board. The students will make two online BINGO cards, one for synonyms and one for antonyms.
(Online Bingo Card Generator)
What’s the teacher doing?
The teacher is displaying the sixteen words on the board for the students to make predictions about possible synonyms and antonyms. After the students have made their predictions, the teacher is evaluating each of the students’ predictions. The teacher is assisting with the online BINGO card generator. / What are the students doing?
After having completed their online BINGO board, the students are making possible predictions of synonyms and antonyms of the sixteen words on the board. After the students have made their predictions, they use the online thesaurus to look up synonyms and antonyms for each of the sixteen words written on the board. Once the students have found their synonyms and antonyms they are randomly writing, on the designated side of their BINGO board, the synonyms and antonyms of the sixteen words.
Phase Four: Elaborate on the Concept
Activity:
5. When all students have completed their BINGO cards, the teacher will give students tokens to use to cover up the BINGO squares. 6. The teacher will then call out an antonym for one of the words on the cards. The student then places a token on the matching word. 7. As soon as a student covers four squares in a row, across, down, or diagonally he/she calls out BINGO. The teacher will check the card to make sure the words are marked correctly. 8. The teacher may provide rewards for winners of each round if desired. Play several rounds so that there are many winners.
What’s the teacher doing?
The teacher is calling out words that are synonyms or antonyms to the original words written on the board. The teacher will check the “winner’s” BINGO card to check to make sure that the synonyms and antonyms marked are in fact synonyms or antonyms to the original words. / What are the students doing?
The students are placing tokens on the synonyms and antonyms that match the original word that appear on their BINGO card. Once a student has completed a row diagonally, horizontally, or vertically, they yell BINGO.
Phase Five: Evaluate students' Understanding of the Concept
Activity:
The students are assessed by their completion and participation in the synonym/ antonym BINGO game. The teacher would also allow the students to practice their synonyms and antonyms on an online website that features educational games.

What’s the teacher doing?
The teacher is observing the students’ completion and participation in the BINGO game, and their understanding of synonyms and antonyms. The teacher is also assisting with the online computer game, when necessary. / What are the students doing?
The students are completing the BINGO game, and then will be assessed in an end of the unit test including synonyms and antonyms. The students will also have to come up with synonyms and antonyms for each of their spelling words, as a part of their Spelling Test. The students are getting additional practice with synonyms and antonyms, by playing the synonym and antonym games on the educational websites.
