Learning Outcomes

By completing this task students will be able to:

  • Identify areas for improvement.
  • Consider and assess strategies for change.
  • Formulate an Action Plan to implement their strategies for change.

Preparation and Materials

  • Copies of Activity Sheets “Making Things Better” (1) and (2).
  • This activity could be sensitive for some students who are experiencing difficulties. Students should be grouped in secure pairs and care should be taken when asking for voluntary feedback to the rest of the class. The exercise is intended to raise self-esteem.

Method

  1. Explain the aims of the lesson using the learning outcomes on Activity Sheet (1) and using the Teachers’ Notes.
  2. Give out Activity Sheet (1) and ask the students individually to tick next to the statements which they think apply to them.
  3. Ask them to fill in the empty boxes by adding three more statements which they think apply to them.
  4. Working in secure pairs, students examine each others sheets and discuss how realistic they have been and write a comment on their partners sheet.
  5. Give out Activity Sheet (2).
  6. Students pick One Thing that they would like to improve on. They discuss ways they could approach improving this thing noting suggestions as they go. They decide the pros and cons of each suggestion – how practical each suggestion is for them – noting these as they go.
  7. Students then complete the action plan.
  8. Ask the students what they have learned from the lesson.
  9. Summarise the main learning outcomes.

Being realistic about our selves is an important part of self-awareness. We can all be better at a number of things! No-ones perfect!
