NET CARE AND REPAIR LESSON POINTS

INTRODUCTION

  • Malaria is caused by a type of female mosquito that bites at night.
  • Malaria is easily preventable and treatable.
  • The most effective way to prevent malaria is by using a long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito net(LLIN)every night.

BENEFITS OF NET CARE AND REPAIR

Main lesson: If you help your parents take care of your net, your net will last many years.

Support points:

  • You won’t have to spend money on new nets and malaria treatment.
  • Your family won’t have to spend money on new nets and malaria treatment.
  • A well-maintained net will help prevent malaria – this will keep pregnant mothers and babies healthy, reduce students’ absenteeism and lead to better performance in class.
  • Your family will call you a good son/daughter because you are taking care of your family’s net.

NET REPAIR

Definition: Refers to behaviors that intend to repair damage to the fabric of LLINs, specifically closing of holes.

Main lesson: Repair holes in your net immediately

Support points:

  • Check your net for holes every day.
  • Do not wait for small holes to get bigger.
  • You can sew it up, tie a knot, use string, or use a patch to close the hole.
  • Repairs are easy and can take no more than 15 minutes.

NET CARE

Definition: Refers to behaviors that intend to prevent damage to the fabric of LLINs. These include tying the LLIN up every day and washing carefully

Main lesson: Tie up your net every morning.

Support points:

  • This will keep the net away from dirt and pests and children who like to play with the net.
  • It is easy to include in your daily household routine.
  • It takes almost no time. It can be done even on busy mornings.

Main lesson: Nets are NOT like clothes. You do NOT need to wash them often. Too much washing wears out the net.

Support points:

  • Keep your net clean by tying it up every day.
  • Wash your net only when very dirty. At most, you should wash it once every three months. Use bar soap; not Jik or OMO.
  • Dry your net in the shade. The sun can damage the insecticide.
  • If you think the insecticide may no longer be effective, it is even more important to repair holes immediately.

NOTE:

  • Encourage pupils to share the knowledge with their peers and household members
  • Encourage the pupils to help mothers repair and care for the LLINs
