To describe how and explain why patterns of UK tourism have changed over time. To evaluate the impacts of these changes and suggest how the changes can be reversed. / Knowledge

Must Use evidence from a graph to write a description of how tourism patterns in the UK have changed over time. Write a brief explanation of reasons why tourism has changed over time. Level 3/4

Group enter the room and resources are given out. Starter activity on the board. Teacher to take register whilst students write their responses on the sheet provided.
Responses are taken using the A, B, C page in the student planner. Teacher to introduce the idea of changing holidays over time (traditional vs modern holidays). Aims are explained.
Students to answer questions through analysing a graph of UKtourism changes over time. Assessed through written descriptions of trends. Questions are scaffolded to allow for differing abilities. Quick self assessment opportunity on PowerPoint.
EXT: Students suggest reasons for the trends shown.
Animation about the reasons for the changes in tourism is used. Students then answer questions using the information that they’ve seen. Assessed using their written responses Questions are scaffolded and a word bank is provided for less able students. Peer assessment opportunity on PowerPoint.
Review objectives – students to explain how they have met each so far.
Students are shown a list of some of the problems created by changes in UK tourism, both for the UK and abroad. Students are asked to explain some of the problems and more able students will be asked to categorise them into ‘social’ and ‘environmental’.Assessed using their written responses.
Students create lists of potential benefits of changes in UK tourism.
EXT: News article comparing the fortunes of Butlins and Pontins. Students should compare how each company has responded to changes in UK tourism and then decide which approach is best.
Plenary: Students rearrange sentences to create three sentences that summarise the points covered in the lesson.
