Lesson Plan: After Summer Vacation

Materials required: Summer Activities Number Match, Activity Bingo, Teachers Speech, My Summer Vacation worksheet.

1Greet the students as usual.

JTE:Good morning class.

Ss:Good morning ______.

ALT:Good morning class.

Ss:Good morning ______.

ALT:How are you?

Etc…

2Welcome the students back from the summer holiday and ask a few of the higher students what they did. Introduce the activity worksheet by saying that there are many interesting things that you can do over the summer vacation.

Explain the activity by telling the students to write the number of the activity in the box above. Do the first one as a group. JTE and ALT walk around and check answers and understanding.

3Check the answers as a group, perhaps write the answers on the board by drawing a mock-up of the worksheet.

4Explain that summer vacation is now over so we can’t say “I watch the Olympics.” We have to say “I ______the Olympics.” Elicit the answer from the students. Go through each activity and have the students write down the past tense in the space provided under each verb at the bottom of the page. Drill each sentence with the students to make sure that know them.

5Hand out the BINGO sheets, have the students write the numbers 1-10 in the spaces leaving out 1 number. Check that they understand that when you read out an activity they have to find the number and check it off on the BINGO sheet.

6Now you are ready to play the BINGO game. Read the conversation, or one of your own and have the students cross off their numbers appropriately, have the JTE’s walk around and make sure that everyone is doing it right. Repeat the conversation again slightly slower and leave a pause after each sentence. If needed read again one more time. To check first get students to call out the numbers that they think came out from the conversation. Then check how many BINGO lines the class got by calling out “Hands up who got ___ lines.” Applaud those students who got 4 Bingo’s as I think that that’s the most you can get. If three’s the highest in the class then applaud those students instead.

7Hand out the My Summer Vacation Sheets. Tell the students that they are now going to get the opportunity to tell you about their own summer vacation. Tell the students to write down the things that they did in the space provided. Tell them that they can either use the activities that have already come out in the lesson, or if they have something more interesting to say they can write that. If they need help, they can raise their hand and someone will come and help them. (If they only know a Japanese explanation get them to describe it or use gestures to help them explain what they want to say, if all else fails you can get help from the JTE for the translation.)

8As this is written work, finally take in the sheets and mark them ready for the next lesson.

9Give your farewells to the class much as you did for the greeting. Tell the “Let’s have fun this term!” with a big smile.
