Lesson Plan: 4 Date: Time: 60 minutes

Grade:9No. Students: 20

Equipment: 20 volleyballs, 40 cones, 2 volleyball nets

Learning Intents (CAPS) – What learning do you expect from the conditions you have created?

  • Cognitive- appropriate shot selection during the mini game, off the ball on court movements to get to opponents shot and set up the next shot for teamates
  • Psychomotor- technique for spiking and rollshot, ability to aim and execute forearm pass to a target
  • Social- how to communicate with teammates during the game, play with a partner to keep ball moving and drill moving

Introductory Activity/Game: Square drill passing with forearm and overhead pass (6 min)

- students will place 4 cones on the ground and will move between two of them. They will forearm or overhead pass back and forth with their partner. The partner will pass to the cone where the student is not and the student will move to the ball in order to pass it back to the partner. Players can mix between forearm and overhead pass based on position of the ball and skill level. Those who are less skilled can use the catch and release model for the overhead pass.

Serve receive and pass drill
(5-7min) / One student will be on the opposite side of the net from their two partners. They will serve the ball over the net to one of the players who will forearm pass to the last partner who will serve as the target. The players will then rotate after two serves. / Ball can be tossed over the net instead of served.
Servers can move the receiver around and put spin on the ball to make it more difficult /
  • Receiver must be in a balanced position and point arms to where they want the ball to go.

Hitting and roll shots.
(10 min) / First demonstration of the roll shot. Getting under the ball and using topspin to put it into space on the other side of the court.
For this drill their will be 4 tossers and the rest of the students will be hitters. Kim and I will toss and 2 other players will also toss. The tosser will either toss the ball close to the net for a hit or farther off the net and the student will play a roll shot. Once the student has hit they will go retrieve the ball and place it in the tossers hand or at their feet. / Some students may need to self feed to start.
Players can try and hit down the line across court as well as do roll shots down the line and across court. /
  • Students should focus on the proper 3 step hitting approach.
  • Really getting under the roll shot and using the wrist snap to create topspin on the ball.

Culminating Activity – 3vs 3 mini tournament.

Students will be divided into close to equal teams and will play half court games against another team. They will attempt to rotate through as many teams as possible in the time we have left over. Teams will play on half of the volleyball court. Teams can change the rules of the game (ie. Where to serve from, whether to serve or toss the ball over the net, as well as boundaries based on the game play and ability of the two teams).

Closure: What are some important fundamental tips for the forearm and overhead pass? For the serve and the spike? How should you move after you have played the ball? Where is the best area to try and hit the ball in the opponents court?
