Lesson: First in the Family Video

● Students will watch a video and hear students, in similar positions, talk about challenges they encountered during their college experiences.

● Projector/Computer

● First in the Family Video (you will need to download the video file)

● First in the Family Sentence Starters (1 per student)

4. Instructions for implementing the activity

● Have the students reflect on their recent college interviews. Have them share out what the experience was like during the interview (questions asked, answers received, concerns they had either before or after the interview, etc.)

● Ask the students: “Do you see yourself going to college? Why or why not?”

● Tell the students they will watch a video, which stars students who were the first in their families to go to college. Ask the students if anyone in their family has gone to college (may have already been shared during the College Interview lesson).

● Pass out the Sentence Starters worksheet. During/after the video, the students will respond using the Sentence Starter worksheet. Have the students pick whichever 5-6 sentences they want to finish.

5. Suggestions for debriefing the activity

● After the video have the students share out some of their responses.
