LESSON #4 Hanukkah

Objectives
Participants will:
- Consider how bringing light to our homes and lives relates to Hanukkah
- Learn how Jewish tradition views spiritual renewal as it relates to the Hanukkah story
- Consider moments in their lives when they needed to trust and have faith, not lose hope
- Share examples of these moments intergenerationally
- Experience trust by building Hanukkiah with tools while blindfolded – relying on words or touch from a friend (resident or student)
- Write/draw reflections on bookmarks depicting “what it means to trust” or bring light to ourselves/community.
- Sing Hannukahsongs to fulfill the mitzvah to bring light to your community
- Consider how music lights up our lives
- Interview residents about their favorite songs by sharing some song Titles from the 20’s-50”s
LEARNING
- Discuss how we can show respect to our elders when we visit WHV. Explain the text “revering our elders” Our obligation as Jewish people to “revere our elders” – what do you think that means? (HO F- How we treat our elders at WHV)
- ChevrutaStudy Text highlighting “revering our elders” and discuss what it looks like in Israel to honor elders (HO I – Sign on Israeli buses)

10:40- 10:55.
Trust Activity – building theHanukkiah together – trust in one another for directions, support to be successful and accomplish the goal –
For this activity, 3-4 people at a table
2 students at the table are blindfolded
Goal – build a Hanukkiah
Reflections Questions what did you complete?
How did you manage the challenge?
How did it feel during the building of the Hanukkiah - (both those who were blindfolded and those who used their sight during the activity?)
Transition: Next we would like to use music to bring “light” to our activities today!
We will play the beginning of a song and the students will ask you questions about the song played such as who is the composer or singer or what is the title. This will help our 6th Graders with a Music and Memory Project coming to you in May 2016. Select tunes from the 30’s - 50’s for this activity.
!0:55- 11:05 Survey residents about their favorite songs from the 30’s – 50’s
11:05-11:20 CJDS Choir and Hanukkah singing-when Joanie (Music Teacher) arrives we teach about the mitzvah of bringing light to our community through song. Finish with lighting candles for 3rd day.
11:20- 11:30 Create bookmark to reflect words or art which depicts “finding the light within ourselves” or what it means to trust and “have hope”

Equipment and Supplies:
Each site will have drinks, Snacks, provided.
Four copies of lesson plan for each site.
Blocks or pegs for each site so that 4 people per Hanukkiah
Book marks (60 – 30 per site), markers, other materials to create book marks
Song surveys, pencils (30 – 15 per site)
