R.3. How will the general wellbeing of the animal be determined?
R.3.a. / How often will the animal be weighed? Generally, with a change in diet, there is a change in weight. To ensure that the animal is not allowed to change so much that its health is adversely affected, the animal must be weighed often. Please state how often. Depending on the expected result of the diet, the animal should be weighed frequently enough to evaluate its health, but no more than required because of the stress on the animal each time it is weighed.
R.3.b. / Generally, animals that rapidly gain or lose more than 15% of their body weight (compared to matched controls) should be eliminated from the study (euthanized) or placed back on a normal diet. If this is not acceptable for this project, please address and justify alternatives below. The committee needs to know exactly when you expect to stop the change in the animal's diet. This is generally based on weight gain or loss stated as a percentage of control weight. The greater the change, the greater the explanation and justification required
