Chairperson Magady informed the Commission that the presentation of the Commission Strategic Plan to the City Council had been postponed in order for the Commission to meet with a representative from the Civic Roundtable. He then introduced Alan Flory from the Roundtable. Mr. Flory told the Commission that the Roundtable was a group of Lee’s Summit business leaders who are interested in many aspects of the City including changes in diversity. He presented a diversity report that had been presented to the Roundtable on May 2, 2005. The Commission decided to incorporate elements from the report into their Strategic Plan and Objectives with the intention of presenting the revised Strategic Plan to the Civic Roundtable, possibly the R-7 Board of Education and then to the City Council.
The criteria for the Humanitarian Award was approved as revised. A copy of the criteria is attached to the minutes. Procedures for the award will be considered at the June meeting.
Chairperson Magady informed the Commission that there were four applicants for the two student position on the Commission. The deadline for applicants is June 21, 2005. Chairperson Magady will appoint a committee to interview the applicants.
Chairperson Magady reported that he attended the last planning meeting for the Southland Ethnic Festival. Planning is on schedule and the festival will occur on October 8, 2005. Commission members, Lessie Thompson and Claudia Walker, are also involved in the festival planning.
Stan Beatty informed the Commission that he had not been able to meet with the Chief of Police concerning the definition of hate crimes in Lee’s Summit, but he hoped to have that meeting before the June meeting of the Commission.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30p.m.
