Application: Technology in the Global Economy

Technology can be a double-edged sword. It can be used to solve many of mankind's greatest challenges, but it also can create challenges. There are two primary ways technology can influence economics. First, a nation's economy could be dependent on technological innovation and manufacturing of technological devices (e.g., circuit boards). For example, the economies of nations such as Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and Singapore, are heavily dependent on technological innovations and manufacturing. Large corporations, such as Sony, Sanyo, and Samsung are headquartered in various parts of Asia and therefore bring massive economic benefit to those areas. Second, a nation's economy could be managed with technology. Consider large industrialized nations such as the United States, China, England, and Germany; these nations' economies are so large, complex, and elaborate, that computer technology is needed to fully understand them.

To prepare for this assignment:

•Review Chapter 7 in Global Issues. Focus on how technology can both solve and create challenges.

•Review the article, "Examining Claims for Information and Communication Technology-Led Development in Africa." Consider how Africa is using information and communication technology to develop new opportunities.

•View the media piece, "Global Exchange: Free Trade and Protectionism," to understand how world trade drives nations' economies.

•Use the same nation you selected for the Discussion.

•Using the Internet or Walden Library, research how advances in technology have shaped and may transform the nation's roles in the global economy.

•Consider dangers that might result from a nation's reliance on technology.

The assignment (2–3 pages):

•Identify the nation you selected. (Australia)

•Explain how advances technology have shaped the nation's role in the global economy.

•Explain how advances in technology may transform the nation's role in the global economy in the future.

•Describe two dangers that may result from the nation's reliance on technology. Be specific and use examples to illustrate your explanation.
