Deerpark Middle School Band

Dear Band Parents and Students,

As you already know, the Solo & Ensemble competition will be held on Saturday, April20, 2013 at Grisham Middle School. Each student should have written their individual performance times and the room numbers where they will be performing. Make sure they know both their solo and ensemble (if applicable) performance times and room numbers. Student should arrive at GMS 30 minutes before performance and go to the cafeteria to warm up. Students are to take their instrument and band binder home on Friday after school. Students who play percussion will be responsible for loading their instrument on the equipment truck after school on Friday. Here are some things to keep in mind for Saturday:

  1. Behavior is of utmost importance. We have a reputation of being both good players and well-behaved students. This is as important to me as how well we perform. It is important that our students set the example of how to act. We will send students home that do not meet our expectations of how to behave!
  2. Students should look nice when they play. This is a performance and students should look their best when they perform – judges are impressed if students are dressed nice. No jeans, shorts, or athletic shoes.
  3. Warm-up is in the GMS cafeteria. There will be a table marked for Deerpark students. Please keep all areas clean and orderly. Students are not to play their instrument in any other area other of the school (especially in the hallways where performances are going on).
  4. Students are not to enter the library / contest office.
  5. Drinks and snacks will be on sale. Food and drinks are allowed in the cafeteria area. Wait until after you have played before eating.
  6. You have all worked hard to prepare for Saturday. Go and play your best and know that Mr. Akande and Mr. Barnhartare proud of you.

Students that are playing solos with piano accompaniment have been rehearsing with their piano accompanist the past week. Please remember to send in payment for the piano accompanist if you have not already done so. The cost is based on two rehearsals and the performance on Saturday. The fee for all solos (no percussion) is $30. Checks should be made payable to your accompanist – Jennifer Dimiceli.

Thank you for all your help and cooperation in making Solo & Ensemble contest a success. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Mr. Akande, Mr. Barnhart
