Job Purpose
To develop the sports performance and recreational sport infrastructure to increase the performance of students in competitive sport and the numbers of students engaged in recreational sport and physical activity. To support student and staff health and wellbeing through the development of a programme of sport and physical activity across the University.
Main activities and responsibilities
  1. Lead & line manage the sports development coaches on a daily basis and ensure all activities are carried out to a high standard.
  2. Continue to develop the coaching and officiating bursary program and offer student volunteering opportunities.
  3. Aim to increase participation levels through the introduction of more diverse student / staff friendly sport and physical activity timetables.
  4. Develop in partnership with the Students Union and the Department of Sport and Exercise Science the Sports Performance infrastructure to move the University up the BCU’s league table.
  5. Ensure that all activities are safe by working with the University Health and Safety Manager.
  6. Daily line supervision and development of the sports development coaches.
  7. Develop various competitions that will ensure maximum participation by students, staff and members of the public.
  8. Increase participation generally in physical activities and provide termly statistical information to the Director of Sport and Physical Activity.
  9. Develop innovative programs to utilise the facilities out of term time.
  10. Look for innovative ways promote to BCU Sport and further increase the number of students & staff participating in the sports development programs within an allocated budget.
  11. Promote all our facilities to the University and students.
  12. Lead the sports development team in teaching / supervising safe and effective physical activities / sport.
  13. Liaise between the sports development team and the University sports clubs.
  14. Organise the sports development team and administer the delivery of Easter Sports Academy / summer camps.
  15. Support the Director of Sport and Physical Activity in liaising with local sports organisations/authorities as and when required.
  16. Interview & recruit student auxiliaries to work & support the sports development programs.
Such other duties, commensurate with the grading of the post that may be assigned by the Director of Sport and Physical Activity or their nominee.
Additional Key Requirements:
Managing People and Resources
Management responsibility for a range of part time sports coaching staff and student ambassadors
Management of sports development coaches and equipment budget
Responsibility for induction and training and objective setting of sports coaches
Provide general guidance and training to Administrator
Communication
Responsibility for implementing and communicating and working with the SU lead Officers in the delivery of sports performance and sport participation objectives
Writing reports on the achievement of targets for increasing student and staff engagement in sports and physical activity sessions
Working with key sport and exercise stakeholders and the Dept for Sport and Exercise on the implementation of key strategy KPIs
Communicate detailed, sometimes complex information to a wide range of colleagues.
There is a requirement for good interpersonal skills and the ability to flex communication style.
Teamwork and collaborative working
Build a team ethos amongst sports coaches to improve the performance of BCU Sports teams
Build partnerships with local and regional sports teams and facility providers to develop further opportunities for BCU students to participate and improve their performance in sport and physical activity
Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure that activities are delivered on time and to a high quality, and that issues and enquiries are responded to quickly and effectively.
Initiative, problem solving and decision making
Lead on the development of a programme of support for Sports Scholarship students
Influence externals stakeholders to support the development of sport and physical activity at BCU
Influence Faculty, and on occasion, University decisions through participating in relevant committees, working groups and other forums.
Contribute to the development of new solutions.
Work environment
Ensure all appropriate risk assessments have taken place for all sport and exercise provision

Person Specification
  • Degree in sport and exercise related discipline
  • Sports coaching and first aid qualifications
  • Experience of working as part of a team to deliver sport and physical activity strategies
  • Ability to develop external sport and physical activity partnerships
  • Experience of developing and implementing sport and physical activity programmes
  • Experience of employing, supervising and managing part time sports coaching staff
  • Extensive experience of working in a sport and physical activity environment ideally within an education setting
  • Knowledge of child protection policies
  • Experience of completing risk assessments
  • Experience of developing external partnerships with local and regional sporting and physical activity agencies
  • Experience of supporting the development of sports performance athletes
  • Experience of developing external income through developing vocational sports and physical activity programmes

Special requirements
  • Ability to work regular evenings
