Lauren PetragliaT&A Final Exam12/9/15

Site One:

  1. List the site name, as noted on the exam, and its URL.

Calories Burned During Activity,

  1. Rate each site on its usefulness and ease of use (no specific rating scale, just your opinion and thoughts) It is an easy site to use because all of the reading options are laid out one after another on the webpage so you can click on exactly what you’re interested in reading. However, the site topics are all linked to other sites so it is very difficult to know where you will be getting the information from and if it is even credible, so as a whole it is not very useful.
  1. Make one suggestion on how you would technologically improve each site - use what you have considered when constructing your websites, any formatting that we used in class or related ideas. I think the site would be more helpful if it were linked to specific credible articles instead of a number of different articles on AboutMe.com or other sites what would make it more useful and it would be less overwhelming to the people who are trying to use the site.
  1. Make one suggestion on what content you would add to each site to improve it - use knowledge that will enhance the site, content, information - be specific Since the site is really plain I feel like an about us, contact us, and or frequently asked questions tabs at the top of the sites home page would help those exploring the page be able to become familiar with it easier without clicking through the different topics trying to figure out what the site is about all on their own.
  1. Was the information accurate - why or why not - how do you know? - give specific reason(s) why you know. Some of the information is accurate because each tab brings you to a different search engines results for that topic. So for example I clicked on the nutrition tips tab and one article “Nutrition for Weight Loss” had pretty accurate information which I know based on what I learned from school. However, other tabs I clicked on did not have as accurate of information such as the “55 Year Old Looks 35” article is just trying to sell readers on a product.
  1. Indicate how you could use the site in your profession. The site could be used in my profession because I could refer a client to look into a specific article based on the research I do to make sure it is a credible article and their needs. If I were personal training I would refer my client to the “Nutrition for Weight Loss” article if they were having trouble remembering proper nutrition tips to stay well-nourished for exercise.
  1. Use the calculators, surveys, quizzes, etc. and comment on how well they identified you based on the criteria used - you should not pay to use the calculators - if there is no calculator, say so - if there is a calculator and it has a charge associated with it, don't pay and let me know there is a calculator and it has a charge to use it. Finding the calculator on this site is confusing. There is a link to a BMI calculator under suggested links which sends you to another site with many different BMI articles. When this is clicked on sends you to a place where you can buy a BMI calculator or has articles about BMI.

Site Two:

  1. List the site name, as noted on the exam, and its URL.

Personal Wellness,

  1. Rate each site on its usefulness and ease of use (no specific rating scale, just your opinion and thoughts) This site is easy to navigate and is useful it seems to be more about keeping kids healthy but there is also a healthy eating planner that anyone can use. You can easily tell the purpose of the site and that it is run by Dairy Council of California, it is well organized and visually appealing.
  1. Make one suggestion on how you would technologically improve each site - use what you have considered when constructing your websites, any formatting that we used in class or related ideas - be specific. I would make the homepage less distracting. The initial page consists of different quizzes and abstracts of articles. It makes me feel like I don’t know where to start first. If the homepage were a slide show of pictures it would be easier to focus on the tabs at the top of the page where I could then choose where I would like to start.
  1. Make one suggestion on what content you would add to each site to improve it - use knowledge that will enhance the site, content, information - be specific. I would add the rest of the food groups as tabs on the top of the homepage. There is already a milk and dairy section and I feel that it would make the page more well-rounded if it had a section tab for the rest of the food groups. This way people could learn about more than just the one.
  1. Was the information accurate - why or why not - how do you know? - give specific reason(s) why you know. The information is accurate because it gives a list of references at the bottom of the articles that you click on. This way you can see and double check yourself, the credibility of the sources and information used.
  1. Indicate how you could use the site in your profession - be specific. I could use this article to teach my clients the importance of exercise to improve and maintain heart health. This way they are familiar with the statistics, causes, and preventatives of heart disease the number one killer in the country.
I took the food personality quiz and it tests what my cooking style says about me. It was actually very accurate. It said I enjoy the process of making recipes from scratch, but time is often short so I need to be efficient by selecting recipes that I can make quickly. This is exactly what I do most of the week.

Site Three:

 List the site name, as noted on the exam, and its URL.

Nutrition Calculators,

 Rate each site on its usefulness and ease of use (no specific rating scale, just your opinion and thoughts) It is an easy site to use because all of the calculator options are laid out one after another on the webpage so you can click on exactly what you’re interested in finding out. However, the site calculators are all linked to other sites so it is very difficult to know where you will be getting the information from and if it is even credible. So as a whole it is more confusing than anything.

 Make one suggestion on how you would technologically improve each site - use what you have considered when constructing your websites, any formatting that we used in class or related ideas - be specific. I think the site would be more helpful if each calculator were linked to one specific credible and accurate calculator instead of a number of different articles on other sites, where you then need to search through a bunch of different calculators and find one you think looks right on your own. That would make it more useful and it would be less overwhelming to the people who are trying to use the site.

 Make one suggestion on what content you would add to each site to improve it - use knowledge that will enhance the site, content, information - be specific. I think pictures would enhance the site and make it more visually appealing to viewers. Right now the site has a black background with blue and white lettering. I feel that this can make those viewing the site think that there was not much effort out into it, and make them feel that it has a boring look.

 Was the information accurate - why or why not - how do you know? - give specific reason(s) why you know. It is hard to tell if the information is accurate because it is not credible. The sites topics/ calculators are linked to a number of other sites. I tried to test out accuracy by using one of the calculators but I could not find a link that would send me to a free calculator so for that reason I will have to say that not only is the information probably not accurate but there is almost no information to go off of.

 Indicate how you could use the site in your profession - be specific. I could use this site in my profession to help clients keep track of their calorie intake. This way they can meet their goal of losing, maintaining, or gaining weight based on their needs.

 Use the calculators, surveys, quizzes, etc. and comment on how well they identified you based on the criteria used - you should not pay to use the calculators - if there is no calculator, say so - if there is a calculator and it has a charge associated with it, don't pay and let me know there is a calculator and it has a charge to use it. There was no free calculator.

Site Four:

 List the site name, as noted on the exam, and its URL.

Aerobic Steps,

 Rate each site on its usefulness and ease of use (no specific rating scale, just your opinion and thoughts) This site is simple to operate and it is easy to find everything under the tabs at the top of the page. The homepage is filled with an aerobic workout schedule for those signed up for classes. Although, it seems like people could do most of them on their own without even being signed up for a class.

 Make one suggestion on how you would technologically improve each site - use what you have considered when constructing your websites, any formatting that we used in class or related ideas - be specific. I would make sure all of the links work and take the person navigating the site to the destination that it is supposed to. Right now the events tab for example when clicked on says that the URL is not found. If I could improve the site I would make sure all of the links were updated or linked correctly.

 Make one suggestion on what content you would add to each site to improve it - use knowledge that will enhance the site, content, information - be specific. I would add an about us section because it seems like this website was made for an aerobics class but after viewing the site I have no idea where the class is located or how to sign up. I think adding an about us tab would make viewers of the site feel more familiar with the class and what it is about even if they are not signed up.

 Was the information accurate - why or why not - how do you know? - give specific reason(s) why you know. I did not personally attend the aerobic classes so I do not know for sure if they were completed on the date listed. However, the site contains the correct aerobic workouts pertaining the type of workout listed in the type column.

 Indicate how you could use the site in your profession - be specific. I would use this site for workout ideas if I had a client training strictly aerobically for some type of sport or event.

There is no quiz, survey, or calculator.

Site Five:

 List the site name, as noted on the exam, and its URL.

Calories Burned in Sports,

 Rate each site on its usefulness and ease of use (no specific rating scale, just your opinion and thoughts) This site is easy to navigate and is useful. It does just what the site name says it does which is tell you how many calories you can burn while playing specific sports. It then also tells you things that you could eat that would make up the number of burned calories.

 Make one suggestion on how you would technologically improve each site - use what you have considered when constructing your websites, any formatting that we used in class or related ideas - be specific. I would put the homepage information in a table rather than a list. I think it would be easier for viewers to glance at each sport and the calories burned all at once rather than having to click on each one to see all of the details.

 Make one suggestion on what content you would add to each site to improve it - use knowledge that will enhance the site, content, information - be specific. I feel like a references section with the sports information would be helpful if added. These way viewers can do further research on their own rather than just being limited to what is given.

 Was the information accurate - why or why not - how do you know? - give specific reason(s) why you know. There are no references so I cannot make sure the site derived the correct information. However, based on the sports I have experience with, like horseback riding, I feel that the calories burned per hour makes sense for this sport.

 Indicate how you could use the site in your profession - be specific.

This would help me keep track of a client’s calorie expenditure if they were involved in a specific sport this way I could figure out what their caloric intake should be also, and how they could meet their goals.

I used the BMI calculator for this site and it told me I was at 21.6. This is healthy but I feel that it could be skewed a little bit since I strength train four days per week.
