Launching Math / Counting 1-20

TEKS: K2 (A) Count forward and backward to at least 20 with and without objects.

Day 1: Launching Math

Materials:

Math Schedule(large enough to reference whole group) including when Math occurs during your schedule, the components, and the order of the components.

Math Tubs filled with manipulatives for free exploration and counting later in the week.

Instruction:

The first day of school you will be using Math lesson time to introduce the students to your expectations for Math time. You will need your schedule.

Call your students to the floor for Math. You may want to teach them a transition song for them to know that Math time is beginning and how you want them to come to the floor. Introduce your procedures for Math referring to your schedule. “Mathematicians, each day we will meet together at this time for our Math lesson. Each lesson will start with a warm up to review things we have already learned. Next I will teach you something new. Then we will have a chance to practice what we learned together, with a partner and by yourself. Finally, we will work in Math stations/tubbing while I meet with you in small groups. When small groups are finished we will meet back on the floor to discuss what we have learned.”

Introduce your Math tub procedures and expectations. Play some songs and introduce expectations for music. Play countdown game and introduce expectations for game. Countdown game: Have students stand up and start counting backwards from 10, they get lower with each number until they sit down at 0.

Practice:

Once you have taught procedures and expectations allow students time to practice using the Math tubs with free exploration. Teachers will monitor and redirect/reteach expectations at this time.

Day 2: Review Math procedures and expectations.

Materials:

Math Schedule (large enough to reference whole group) including when Math is during your schedule, the components, and the order of the components.

Math Tubs filled with manipulatives for free exploration and counting later in the week.

Instruction:

The second day of school you will be using Math lesson time to review your expectations for Math time. You will need your schedule

Call your students to the floor for Math using transition song or other method you use. Review your procedures for Math referring to your schedule. “Mathematicians, yesterday we learned that each day we get together at this time for our Math lesson. Each lesson starts with a warm up to review things we have already learned. Next I will teach you something new. Then we will have a chance to practice what we learned together, with a partner and last by yourself. Finally, we will work in Math stations/tubbing while I meet with you in small groups. When small groups are finished we will meet back on the floor to discuss what we have learned.” Review your Math tub procedures and expectations. Play some songs and review your expectations for music. Play countdown game and review expectations for games. Countdown game: Have students stand up and start counting backwards from 10, they get lower with each number until they sit down at 0.

Practice:

Once you have reviewed procedures and expectations allow students time to practice using the Math tubs with free exploration. While the students are exploring the tubs pull them into a small group.

(Small group instruction) The teacher should pull students for a very short small group time (approx.. 5 minutes long). They will not be ability grouped at this early time in the school year. Do something very simple like practicing counting to 20 as a group. The main objective is for the students to understand that while the teacher is teaching a small group the other students in the classroom should not interrupt. Theteachers will also need to monitor and redirect/reteach expectations at this time. Rotate your groups after no more than 10 minutes. The rotation process will probably need to be practiced several times.

Day 3: Counting to 10 with number charts.

Materials:

Math Schedule

Copies of 1-10 chartfor each student and 5 teacher copies (sample chart attached)Teacher may consider keeping these in the student’s Math Interactive Notebook if they have one.

Math Tubs filled with manipulatives for free exploration and counting.

Red and Yellow counters

Instruction:

Follow math schedule introduced in day 1 and 2.

“Today we will begin practicing counting from the number 1 all the way to 10 by ones”. Students need to understand that just like we learn our letters in order to read and write, we need to learn our numbers and counting for a foundation in Math. “Each number we say when we are counting has a symbol to go with it. (Like saying alphabet and letters) This year we are going to learn to count to 100 and beyond, but this week we will start by counting to 10.”

Count for students to 10, pointing to number chart. Then count again to 10 having the students count with you while you place a counter on each number. Play count to 20 song(s) of your choice. Play countdown game. Play counting down from 20 song. (You may want to stop the song when it reaches 10)

Practice:

Review procedures and expectations for math tubs, pass out math tubs.

Group #1 (Partner): Send students to table to practice counting to 10 with a partner while putting a counter on each square of the 1-10 chart.

Group #2 (Independent): Have students each count to 10 and match a counter from tub onto 1-10 chart. Teacher can gather data at this time.

Free exploration with math tubs while teacher meets with small groups to review and extend.

Group #3 (Small group): count to 10 using yellow and red counters to learn 1:1 correspondence. To extend you can have them count to 10 starting at any number between 1 and 10.

Day 4: Counting to 10 with number lines.

Materials:

Copies of 1-10 chart

Number line (Will cut apart a 1-10 chart to make number lines. Have 4 ready for small group and make 1 with class.)

Math Tubs filled with manipulatives for free exploration and counting.

Red and Yellow counters

Instruction:

“Today we will continue counting from the number 1 all the way to 10 by ones. Each number we say when we are counting has a symbol to go with it. (Like saying alphabet and letters) Yesterday we pointed to the numbers on a chart. Today we will use a number line.” Construct in front of students cutting apart a chart and making a number line.

Count for students to 10, pointing to number line. Then count again to 10 having the students count with you. Play count to 20 song(s) of your choice. Play counting down from 20 song. (Again, you may want to stop the songs at 10). Play countdown game.

Practice:

Review procedures and expectations for math tubs, pass out math tubs.

Group #1: Send students to table to practice counting to 10 with a partner while putting a counter on each square of the 1-10 chart.

Group #2: Have students each count to 10 and match a counter from tub onto 1-10 chart.

Group #3 (Small group): Students practice counting to 10 while matching counters to the numbers on the number lines.

To extend you may have them start counting at any number between 1 and 10.

TEKS: K2 (A) Count forward and backward to at least 20 with and without objects. K5 The student is expected to recite numbers up to at least 100 by ones and tens beginning with any given number.

Day 5: Counting to 10 beginning at any given number

Materials:

Copies of1-10 Chart

Red and Yellow counters

Ball

Math Tubs filled with manipulatives for free exploration and counting.

Instruction:

“Today we will practice counting to 10 by ones, starting with any number.

Count with students to 10, pointing to a chart and number line.” Play count to 20 song(s) of your choice. Show students how to count up to 10 starting with any number. Then have a student come up and point to a number between 1 and 10 but not 1 or 10. Together practice counting from this number and go up to 10. Introduce new game, “Counting on up”. In this game you will sit in a circle. Roll the ball to a student and say a number. That student needs to begin counting with that number and count up to 10. Then they roll the ball and give a starting number. It can’t be the number 1 or 10! Play counting down from 20 song. Play countdown game.

Practice:

Review procedures and expectations for math tubs, pass out math tubs.

Group #1: Send students to table to practice counting to 10 starting with any number. One partner starts counting and stops at a number and puts the counter on that number on their 1-10 chart. The other partner counts up from that number. Switch.

Group #2: Have students each count to 10 and match a counter from tub onto 1-10 chart.

Group #3 (Small group): Students practice counting to 10 starting at any number. Play same game as partner practice.

Then this game should go into math tubs for practice.

To extend have students count backwards from 10.
