Our web site is new. Give it a try at losaltossunsetrotary.org and see what you think. Frederic Dalle has launched us into the next century, and we understand how this leaves some of you behind who don't have computer. Now is probably the time to go

out and spend that $200 on something with a few Megs so you can visit our website and get your bulletin by e-mail!

Presidents Meeting

Meeting held on the first Friday following the first Wednesday of the month. We need to help Sunny out if he can’t attend this meeting.

2002 Avenues of Service

Thursday, September 26 2002
4:30 p.m. to 9:00pm
Centennial Hall, Hayward

The Avenues of Service is the annual event held in the Fall for all Club Officers, Directors, Committee Chairs and Committee Members, to inform all District 5170 Rotarians about the Four Rotary Avenues of Service: Club, Community, International, and Vocational Service, as well as Youth Service, Membership, R.I. Foundation, and this year; PolioPlus thrown in to round out the instructional evening. There are sessions planned at 5:00 pm for Club Presidents with District Governor Brad Howard and Presidents-Elect will meet with District Governor-Elect Don Allen as well.

The evening begins with fellowship and registration starting at 5:00 pm. At 6:00pm the workshop sessions start. Each of these sessions will provide members with information and action steps necessary to carry out the service projects your club will want to be involved with. These sessions are especially valuable to new Rotarians. This year the event will have a decidedly international flair, as we will be hosting the following District 5170 guests:

DG Robert Atta / Ghana
PDG Raman Bhatia / India
PDG Juan Forester / Guatemala
Humberto Mayorga / Mexico
Dr. Jorge Rojas / Chile
Yan Xiaolu / China

These guests will be in attendance, and will participate in our dinner program at this year's Avenues of Service.

Your club's President or designee will handle registration. Please see that your name is listed on your club's registration form, and that the form and payment is mailed or faxed to the District Registration Chair Vicki Rombs. Clubs are responsible for the registration fee: $30.00 if registered by Monday September 16th, $35.00 after September 16th. Or Register Online

WANTED!

ROTARIAN GSE TEAM LEADER TO VIETNAM

HIGH TECH GROUP STUDY EXCHANGEMARCH 2003
What's This? The first GSE Team in history to exchange with Vietnam!
We have partnered with three other West Coast Districts to simultaneously lead four, full teams to and from Vietnam. District 5170's team emphasis will be Technolgy. Since there are currently no Rotary Clubs in Vietnam, Sue McKinney, a member of the Rotary Club of Oakland Sunrise, who resides in Vietnam will aid in the selection of the Vietnamese teams and coordinate events in Vietnam for our teams.
When? The outbound exchange will take place March 3 - 31, 2003 with a pre-departure orientation March 1 and 2. See the Calendar of Events for more details.
Who is Eligible to Lead the Tteam? A District 5170 Rotarian who wants a profound and unusual experience. You will need to help organize a team, study the culture of the area, and travel for a month. Demonstrated leadership ability, experience in Rotary, travel experience in Southeast Asia and familiarity with the Vietnamese language is considered a plus.
If Selected, Then What? You will help select and organize a team of non-Rotarians professionals who are between 25 & 40 years of age. After the team is selected you will help organize and lead both a cultural & Rotary training session to develop a cohesive team that will represent the US and Rotary appropriately. In addition, you will direct and be responsible for the D-5170 team throughout the trip. Upon your return you will be asked to make Club and District presentations.
Other Aspects? Your first stop will be in Thailand, where your team will represent D-5170 in a multi-District conference, where the Rotary International President, Bhichai Rattakul, will be in attendance. In Vietnam, you will stay with Vietnamese families, in the homes of ex-patriots and in hotels, visit local sights and potential Rotary projects, and attend meetings and special events. Keep a log of your journey, submit a written report and make presentations upon your return.
Why Vietnam? Rotary GSE exchanges promote international understanding and provide a positive image of the US and Rotary. Currently there are no Rotary Clubs in Vietnam, so this trip will be a significant early step in demonstrating some of the positive benefits Rotary could bring to the country of Vietnam. In the United States, it will provide a positive image of Rotary among the Vietnamese and other ethnic groups, hopefully leading to additional interest in membership in Rotary.
Okay, How Much? All travel and housing provided. You pay your personal expenses.
How Do I Apply? Submit an application with your club's sponsorship to Chan Mugan or Sam Bishop Include a brief essay outlining leadership and travel experience. Interviews are scheduled for early September. See the Calendar on the above links for the deadline. For more information on team Leader requirements and to download the application, please click here: Team Leader info and application process web page
