RAVENSDOWN Agricultural
Communicator of the Year 2018
In association with the New Zealand Guild of Agricultural Journalists
and Communicators (NZGAJC)
This award recognises excellence in communicating issues, events or information in agriculture (not necessarily Guild members).
Person nominated: (Name and full contact details – phone, cellphone, email)
Nominator: (Must be a Guild member)
Reason for nomination:
Please provide as much detailed information as possible on why you are nominating this person.
Because of the broad composition of the judging panel, there is a good chance some of the ten judges may not know the person you are nominating. Therefore, the quality of the information you provide to support your nomination is almost as important as the contributions made by the person being nominated.
The supporting material should also include examples to highlight the effectiveness of the communication. These could be published articles, speeches, events they have addressed, CDs or testimonials from people who have gained from a communication project.
Please provide this information in an electronic form, via email, including the attached sheet. If you are supplying clippings, brochures or electronic support material (audio, broadcast, digital etc), please provide links to these.
Two referees: These people may be contacted by the judges if more information is needed to assess the communicator’s skills and achievements “from the receiving end.”

RAVENSDOWN AGRICULTURAL
COMMUNICATOR
OF THE YEAR AWARD
CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION
The award is to recognise excellence in communicating issues, events or information in agriculture.
Those nominated shall be judged on the effectiveness of their communication, whether it be on a national, regional or sector basis (e.g. to goat farmers or beekeepers, or non-rural audiences like bankers.) Have a look at previous winners on the guild website,
Nominators have to provide detailed supporting evidence of the effectiveness of the communication. This could be published material, it could be just a testimonial from the nominator, or from someone who has gained from a communication project. The judges need to be able to judge the message as well as the messenger.
Two referees must be provided, who can comment on the communicator’s skills and achievements, from the “receiving end”.The judges may contact these referees if they need further information in order to judge the nominee.
There will be 10 judges, one of which Ravensdown has one representative. The judges are to come from as wide a range of interest groups and regions of New Zealand as is practical.
The winner is to be selected after considering four criteria, ranking each person out of ten in each category.
- How widely known is the person within their target sector (general public, region of NZ, sector group e.g. beekeepers).
- Level of impact of communications/how well they communicated (e.g. changed farm management, assisted with understanding of issue, etc).
- Commitment to agricultural industry.
- General “gut feeling” for whether the person deserves the award.
The key words are communication and agriculture…in its widest sense.
