The Batty Cup Any poem in STANDARD ENGLISH not exceeding 100 lines

The Mercer Cup A short story in STANDARD ENGLISH not exceeding 1500 words

NEW COMPETITIONS

The William Baron Cup Flash Fiction. Short Story in Standard English not exceeding 500 words

The Douglas Townsend Cup Short Story in Standard English not exceeding 1500 words beginning with this

set sentence.

“There was no possibility of taking a walk that day”.

NOTE: The adjudicator has the right to withhold the cup in any class where the required standard has not been attained.

AWARDS: In each competition the first-placed entry will receive an Award from the Association. A certificate will be awarded to the first three placed and any commended entries.

THE LAA ‘WRITER OF THE YEAR’ ROSE BOWL AND THE LADY HULTON AWARD

is awarded for the most outstanding entry chosen from the cup winners.

The recipient will also receive an Award from the Association.

RULES FOR ANNUAL COMPETITIONS

1.  ENTRANTS:- must be paid-up members of the Association

must not submit more than three entries in each class in any one year.

ENTRIES:- must be the competitors own work, printed on single sides of A4 paper

MUST NOT BE TYPED ALL IN CAPITAL LETTERS

(HANDWRITTEN SUBMISSIONS NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE)

must be double spaced (except for poetry) with a margin all round

must have a page 1 header to show exact number of words/lines for poetry

all other pages to be numbered

must not have the entrant’s name anywhere on the manuscript

must not have been previously published or be published prior to the announcement of the winners the following year (Published means any recital, broadcast or reproduction by any means whether for payment or otherwise.)

must be accompanied by the LAA entry form (or photocopy of same) and £2 entry fee for each entry. Multiple entries three for £5. Remittances, payable to Lancashire Authors Association, must be received by the Competition Secretary (name and address on the entry form ) by the closing date 31 January. (Receipt of entries will be acknowledged if an S.A.E. is enclosed or e-mail address supplied.)

FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH ANY OF THE ABOVE RULES WILL RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION

2.  No competition will be adjudicated in 2018 if there are less than ten entries.

3.  Winners will be announced at the A.G.M.; trophies and certificates presented at the June meeting.

4.  Entries will be treated confidentially. Copyright remains with the Author but the Association retains the

‘Right to Publish’ in The Record or any Association Publication, without payment or seeking permission,

for 12 months after the announcement of winners.
