Lakeshore Technical College is launching an Associate Degree in Emergency Management (Fall of 2007) designed for current professionals and those just entering the career field. Using a blended learning format, you are able to acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities to effectively manage a comprehensive emergency management program as a result of a combination of online classes and just enough hands-on experiences in our state-of-the art campus facilities.
Our first courses will include “Fundamentals of Emergency Management” and “Introduction to Hazards”. These courses will foster abilities to prepare the learner for:
- emergency management functions at the local, state, and national levels
- determining the resource requirements and how to garner and maintain these resources
- advocate the importance of training/exercising
- apply basic terms used to discuss hazardous materials problems and explain how hazardous materials enter and move through the body and the environment
- explain the roles of Federal, State, and local governments in reducing hazardous materials risks and summarize the key provisions of critical Federal legislation
- discuss major hazardous materials identification systems currently in use
- outline how communities identify possible targets of opportunity in a terrorist’s use of toxic industrial chemicals (TICs) as Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and to assess what local communities can do to increase their preparedness to respond to hazardous materials accidents of any size
- develop steps individuals can take to protect themselves in an incident.
Our reason for attending the conference is to develop a strong network with other community and technical colleges throughout the United States. Our desired outcome is to participate in the sharing of best practices and ideas involving program development, projected outcomes, student recruitment, distance education, developing joint partnerships and discovering future ideas for sustaining a healthy program. We want to develop strong networks with the participants in attendance who have expertise in these areas.
