Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to Lake Park Audubon High School and the 2016-2017 school year!

Our focus as a school is to provide opportunities for all students to succeed. Your involvement and support is a vital component in accomplishing the mission of Lake Park Audubon School District 2889. With students, parents/guardians and school staff working together we will make this an outstanding year.

To help you be successful, you have received this handbook containing an explanation of LPA expectations and policies. It is important that you become familiar with the procedures and regulations that govern the school. All students are required to abide by the Rights and Responsibilities Handbook. Some rules are condensed in this handbook; however, complete policies are available on the district website. Students and parents/guardians are asked to take time to read and discuss the Student & Parent/Guardian Handbook and to keep it handy for future reference.

If at any time you have any questions about the information in this handbook, please stop by for a visit or contact me at 218-238-5914 or email .

As your principal, I would personally like to welcome you. I am looking forward to a successful year at Lake Park Audubon High School. Together students, parents/guardians, faculty, staff and administration will achieve a rewarding year for each student at LPA. It is good to be part of the Raider Nation! Go Raiders!

Sincerely,

Mary Merchant,

Secondary Principal

All students at Lake Park Audubon School will be provided handbooks when they begin attending school each year.

Assemblies are held for the benefit of students, and therefore, require full participation of all students. Students contribute to the success of assembly programs by:

Being on time and taking assigned seats promptly.

Showing appreciation and consideration by being attentive.

Applauding with vigor and pep, not with prolonged applause, whistling, stomping, booing, or other rowdy behavior.

Each head coach may request two pep fests per season. The dates and times will be set by a meeting of the advisor, the coach and the athletic director. Additional pep fests may be scheduled for tournament play.

BEVERAGES & FOOD

Pop may not be consumed during the school day (8:30 a.m. – 3:08 p.m.) and will be disposed of and disciplinary action taken as deemed necessary. Other beverages are permissible in the common areas as long as they do not cause a problem. Food is allowed in common areas.

CHANGE OF INFORMATION

Parents are asked to keep the school office informed of changes in address, telephone numbers, and emergency information. This is extremely important so that we are able to contact parents in case of illness or an emergency. Change of information can be completed online through Synergy portal.

SCHEDULE CHANGES

Students in grades 7-9 are divided into sections. All sections take similar classes; each has its own schedule. Sophomores, juniors and seniors have a chance to register for electives. Students are allowed to drop and add courses for the upcoming quarter during the last five days of each quarter. They may also be permitted to make schedule changes the first two days of the new quarter. All schedule changes must be approved by the counselor and should be made for the following reasons: (1) a change in career goals, (2) to meet graduation requirements, and (3) teacher recommendation.

No “drops” or “adds” will be allowed after the second day of the quarter except in cases to be determined in a hearing which will include the teacher(s) involved, the student and/or parent making the request, the student’s faculty advisor, and the counselor.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS AND GUIDELINES

The teacher will publish expectations of conduct for the classroom at the beginning of the quarter (year). Academic dishonesty will be addressed by each teacher, which may result in loss of credit for the academic task(s) in question.

COUNSELING SERVICES

The school has a full time counselor who is available every day. Students can be seen individually, in small groups, or in the classroom. Contact the office for more information.

ABSENCES

A student who leaves school during the day will be excused only through the office with the consent of his/her parent/guardian and must sign out.

Excused absence indicates an absence from school with parent/guardian consent and school permission. The following absences are considered excused within the limits per quarter/trimester/semester allowed:

Quarantine, hospitalization or death in the immediate family or of a close friend or relative.

Funerals may be excused by written permission from parent/guardian in advance.

Family emergencies.

Court appearance, probation visits, etc. Student must present an appointment card.

Clinic or hospital appointments (dental, medical, vision, counseling or mental health) that cannot be arranged at another time. Student must present an appointment card.

Student illness or injury during the school day. Students not attending their regular schedule or leaving the school building without arranging necessary permission of the office personnel will be marked unexcused or skipping even if parents attempt to excuse the absence.

Serious illness in the student’s immediate family.

Religious activity participation.

Physical emergency conditions such as fire, flood, storm, impassable roads, etc.

Parent requested and approved absences i.e. family vacations, family needs, hunting, fishing etc. The following procedure must be followed in order for the intended absence of more than one school day to be excused. Parents must submit a written request stating date/time and the reason for the absence at least two school days prior to the absence. For an intended absence of one day or less, a parent must notify the school prior to the absence. Students are responsible for obtaining an advance make-up slip in the office.

School-directed excused absences which would include, but are not limited to: Field trips, athletic contests, interscholastic contests, music lessons, student council, club or team meetings with advisors, support groups, college or recruiter visits, pre-arranged excused absences for student participation in non-school competition and performance activities, spectators at state/regional competitions when LPA is not participating; student spectators must have parent/guardian approval, driver’s permit test, school suspensions and other circumstances approved by school administration. Suspensions are to be handled as excused absences and students will be permitted to complete make-up work.

Unexcused Absences are any absence detected by the school and not verified by the parent as an excused absence. Unexcused Absencesinclude absences other than those listed above, any absences in which a student and/or parent fails to comply with LPA reporting attendance procedure, work at home, work at a business (except for school-sponsored work release program), non-prearranged family vacations, missed bus, overslept, truancy/skipping school, other non-school authorized excuses, excessive visits to the sick room, arrival to class 5 minutes after class has started, cold weather, hot weather, the car not starting, car trouble, oversleeping, running late, not having the right clothing, not liking the teacher, having to babysit, conflict or being afraid of other students at school, and no parent permission for the absence and any other absence not included under the school district attendance procedures.

The following procedure will be used in dealing with unexcused absences: 1) For an initial offense the student will be notified of the unverified/unexcused status by a notation on the make-up slip by the office. The student will be required to make up missed work and will be warned about academic and activities eligibility. 2) Administration (or designee)will notify the student and parents. Truancy laws will be explained when relevant, academic and co-curricular implications will be explained, and the student will be informed of removal from class after the third (limit of 2) unexcused absence. 3) Administration (or designee) will request a conference with the student and parents. Truancy action, attendance plan involving the student, parent/guardian, counselor and administration/designee) or alternative education plans may be initiated after an attendance conference has been held. Social and psychological resources will be offered when appropriate.

Loss of Credit: Students who incur 3 unexcused absences in a quarter, 4 unexcused absences in a trimester or 6 unexcused absences in a semester will lose credit and be assigned the grade of NP/W.

Students who incur a combination of 6 excused/unexcused absences in a quarter, 8 excused/unexcused absences in a trimester or 12 excused/unexcused absences in a semester will lose credit and be assigned the grade of NP/W.

School authorized absences do not count toward loss of credit.

The student, the student’s parent/guardian has the right to appeal the loss of credit and removal from class due to excessive absences. A committee will hear the student’s appeal to remain in the class with the opportunity to receive credit. The student must contact administration for the appropriate materials and procedures to make their appeal within three days of the No Pass/Withdraw Notice.

The school reserves the right to refuse excusing an absence when requests become excessive. Once a students and parent/guardian have been given notification, all future absences will be considered unexcused unless documentation signed by a health care provider for full absence is presented to the school.

Pre-arranged absences Pre-arranged absences include learning activities, field trips, co-curricular events, family needs that require students to miss classes or other absences approved by the teacher or administration. For school trips, the faculty advisor will publish a list of students who will miss school for a learning activity. This list will be distributed to teachers, administrators and the high school secretary at least two school days in advance of the trip.

Students will communicate in advance or pick up an “advance make-up slip” from the high school office prior to an intended absence. The student will communicate or take the slip to all teachers whose classes will be missed for their make-up assignments and signatures.

A student will be allowed one school day for each day of pre-arranged absence to make up routine daily tasks (homework); the teacher determines any other due dates for special assignments (projects, quizzes, tests, etc.) prior to the pre-arranged absence.

Parent’s requesting approval for an absence (i.e. family vacations, family needs, hunting, fishing, etc.) of more than one school day must submit a written request stating date/time and the reason for the absence at least two school days prior to the absence. For an intended absence of one day or less, a parent must notify the school prior to the absence. Students are responsible for obtaining an advance make-up slip in the office.

TARDIES

Students are expected to be in their assigned areas at designated times. Students who arrive to class after the final bell tone but before 5 minutes will be considered tardy. Three tardies will equal one absence.

Students tardy at the beginning of their school day must report to the high school office for an admission slip to their class. Students who are 5 minutes or less late will be considered tardy. Students arriving after 5 minutes will be coded as an absence.

A student arriving late for class will be charged with an unexcused tardy unless he/she provides a tardy admit from another faculty member, administration (or designee), or the high school secretary. Two unexcused tardies in a quarter or trimester for the same class will result in a detention given by the classroom instructor.

Students who ride buses which arrive late will not be charged with tardiness.

Students who drive to school will not be excused for arriving late other than for reasons considered legitimate by administration (or designee).
