The School Board of the Parish of Lafayette, State of Louisiana, met in regular session at its meeting place, the Lafayette Parish School Board Administrative Building, Board Room, Lafayette, Louisiana, on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at 5:30 P.M. pursuant to notice given in writing to every member.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Tommy Angelle, President; Dawn Morris, Vice-President; Elroy Broussard, Justin Centanni, Tehmi Chassion, Jeremy Hidalgo, Erick Knezek, Britt Latiolais and Mary Morrison, Board Members; Burnell LeJeune, Interim Secretary-Treasurer/Superintendent

MEMBERS ABSENT: None

I. MEETING OPENINGS

The meeting was called to order by Angelle and he opened with a moment of silence. Hidalgo led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

OPENING COMMENTS

Interim Superintendent Burnell LeJeune informed the Board that the Board Workshop scheduled for January 31st had been cancelled because there wouldn’t be enough Board members in attendance, but had rescheduled it for February 11th. He thanked Lafayette Education Foundation and sponsors for hosting the teacher award ceremony that honors outstanding K-12 educators in Lafayette Parish.

II. RECOGNITIONS/PRESENTATIONS

1. Acadiana High School Football Team - 2014 LHSAA Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Classic 5A Champions

The Board recognized and congratulated Acadiana High School Wrecking Rams football team for winning the 2014 LHSAA Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Classic 5A finals in New Orleans on December 13, 2014. The Rams beat fourth seeded Destrehan by a score of 23-7. This marks the 4th State Championship for Acadiana, winning titles previously in 2006, 2010 and 2014. The Rams Head Coach is the Daily Advertiser 5A Coach of the Year, Ted Davidson.

2. Recognition of Elijah Evans, Comeaux High Student, Louisianian of the Year and Three Dot Dash Global Teen Leader

The Board recognized Elijah Evans, Comeaux High Student for being selected as Louisianian of the Year and Three Dot Dash Global Teen Leader by Louisiana Life Magazine for his project on Preventing Child Abuse and Improving the lives of Foster Children.

3. Acadiana ArtWorks Project - Create Your Bench-Mark Competition

The Board congratulated Shelly Breaux (D. Thibodaux STEM Magnet) and Kate Durio (Downtown Lafayette) for winning the Young Leaders Award of $10,000 to go towards their proposed community project. They decided to partner on this project because they identified three shared passions for the community: Safeguarding our culture. Beautifying our community. Connecting with education.

Tracy Aucoin, Project Director, spoke about the purpose of the Gear Up program which is to significantly increase the number of students who stay in school and are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.
